WASHINGTON — Americans planning to send gifts and packages during the upcoming holiday season could soon face higher shipping costs after the U.S. Postal Service announced a temporary rate increase on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The USPS said it plans to raise prices for several of its major package-delivery services during the busy 2026-27 holiday period.
The proposed increase would affect USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and Parcel Select shipments for both retail and commercial customers.
According to USPS, the rates would increase by an average of 6% if the proposal receives approval from the Postal Regulatory Commission.
The change is currently expected to take effect October 4, 2026, putting the higher prices in place just as holiday shipping activity begins to accelerate.
How Much More Will Customers Pay?
The exact amount customers pay will depend on several factors, including the shipping service, package weight and distance. USPS says the proposed increases could range from relatively small adjustments to significantly higher costs for heavier express shipments.
For example, the minimum increase would be $0.40 for a three-pound Zone 1 USPS Ground Advantage commercial shipment.
At the other end of the range, a 25-pound Zone 5 Priority Mail Express package could cost $10.50 more under the temporary holiday pricing. That means customers sending heavier packages or using faster shipping options could notice the difference more clearly.
For people sending multiple gifts or packages across the country, even modest increases per shipment could add up quickly during the holiday season.
USPS Says the Increase Is Only Temporary
There is some relief for customers who are concerned that the higher rates could become permanent. USPS said the proposed holiday pricing would remain in effect only through January 17, 2027.
That means the higher rates would cover the key holiday shipping period but would not continue indefinitely. The agency has used temporary holiday pricing adjustments before, making this latest announcement part of a broader pattern of seasonal shipping changes.
USPS said the latest increase is intended to align with “competitive practices.” The proposal still needs approval from the Postal Regulatory Commission before the new prices can officially take effect.
USPS Has Already Raised Prices This Year
The upcoming holiday increase is not the first USPS price change of 2026. The agency raised prices by about 8% in April, citing higher fuel costs as one of the factors behind the adjustment.
USPS also announced a similar temporary holiday pricing plan in September 2025 for the following holiday season.
For customers and businesses that rely heavily on the Postal Service, the latest announcement means shipping expenses could remain an important consideration as the holiday shopping season approaches.
Small businesses that ship orders to customers may also need to account for the temporary increase when planning holiday fulfillment costs.
FedEx Also Raising Holiday Shipping Rates
USPS is not the only major shipping company preparing for higher holiday-season prices.
FedEx has already announced its own temporary holiday pricing changes, with its increased rates scheduled to run from October 26 through January 17, according to a July announcement from the company.
With both major carriers planning seasonal adjustments, customers may want to compare shipping services and prices before sending holiday packages.
For consumers, the key date to remember is October 4, when USPS expects its temporary increase to begin if approved. The higher rates are currently scheduled to disappear after January 17, 2027, meaning the holiday shipping premium will not last forever.
