IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa Hawkeye community is mourning the loss of Derek Phillips, a junior horn player with the Iowa Hawkeyes marching band who died after suffering a serious medical emergency during the team’s season-opening football game.
Phillips was at the Hawkeyes’ matchup against Northern Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 5, when his family said he collapsed in the heat and suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.
The game began at 3:15 p.m. local time, when temperatures were around 90 degrees. According to KCRG, the conditions made it the fourth-hottest game in Hawkeyes history.
What began as the opening game of a new football season quickly became a heartbreaking moment for Phillips’ family, friends, fellow musicians and the wider Iowa community.
Family Shares Heartbreaking Update
Phillips’ family provided an update through his social media account on Monday, Sept. 7, saying doctors had made extraordinary efforts to save him after the medical emergency.
“Despite the extraordinary efforts of the ICU team at the University of Iowa Hospital, the damage was too severe, and we have made the heartbreaking decision to remove life support,” his family said.
Before that decision was made, the family described Phillips as being comfortable and surrounded by loved ones, while also emphasizing the important role music played throughout his life.
“Derek is comfortable, surrounded by family, and enveloped in the music he loved so much,” they shared.
The family also asked people who knew Phillips to share their favorite memories, photographs or recordings of him.
“Reading them will bring immense comfort to our family right now,” they said, using the hashtag #DIFD, or Do It For Derek.
Derek Phillips Remembered for Music and Kindness
Phillips’ family remembered him not only as a marching band member but as someone whose personality and passion for music touched the people around him.
They described his “light, humor, and kindness” and highlighted his love for performing.
“He was a phenomenal musician-whether he was playing jazz, singing his heart out, or marching under the lights, music was the language of his soul,” his family said.
They also reflected on his recent experience touring with a drum and bugle corps, describing it as an especially meaningful part of his life.
The memories shared by his family painted a picture of a young musician who embraced different forms of performance and found a deep sense of identity through music.
Iowa Hawkeyes Band Mourns Beloved Member
The Hawkeyes marching band released its own statement on Tuesday, Sept. 8, confirming Phillips’ death. The band said Phillips had “experienced a significant medical emergency” and died Tuesday morning.
“Derek Phillips was our mellophone section leader, a beloved member of the School of Music horn studio, and the kind of friend, student, and musician that represents the very best of what it means to be a Hawkeye,” the band’s statement said.
His role as a mellophone section leader meant Phillips was not simply another member of the marching band. He was part of the group responsible for helping lead and support fellow musicians within the section.
His death has therefore left a particularly painful loss for those who shared the field and music program with him.
