New York City, NY — Trader Joe’s reopened its Upper West Side location Saturday after a five-month renovation, drawing long lines of shoppers eager to see the newly updated store.
The location, known as “the busiest Trader Joe’s in the world” because of its upscale, family-friendly setting, quickly became crowded as customers waited along Amsterdam Avenue to get inside.
But once shoppers entered, many discovered that the newly renovated space had another problem: large portions of the shelves were barely stocked.
The situation left some customers searching aisle after aisle for everyday groceries and popular Trader Joe’s favorites.
Basic grocery staples were missing
Shoppers encountered shortages across both floors of the specialty supermarket during the weekend.
One young shopper described the atmosphere as “giving gulag” while searching the frozen food section for a package of gnocchi. Another frustrated customer summed up the situation more bluntly: “They don’t even have bags of salt.”
Several pantry staples were also unavailable Sunday afternoon, including couscous, rice and orzo. Most varieties of tomato sauce were missing, along with all kinds of bacon and several popular raw chicken products.
Customers looking for ground chicken, whole chicken thighs and whole chicken breasts were also largely out of luck. The yogurt selection had been reduced to just a few less-popular flavors, leaving shoppers with limited choices.
Frozen food aisles leave shoppers disappointed
The shortages extended well beyond pantry staples. The frozen food section was missing several popular Asian-inspired products, including chicken shu mai and scallion pancakes.
Frozen Mexican dishes, such as beef, chicken and vegetarian tamales, were also unavailable. Shoppers searching for frozen pizza or most varieties of macaroni and cheese faced similarly empty sections. Cookies were another disappointment, particularly for younger shoppers.
“Long line for no cookies,” one little girl reportedly sighed as she walked away without the treat she had been hoping to find.
Trader Joe’s employee explains the shortages
With customers increasingly frustrated, a Trader Joe’s employee offered an explanation for the unusual lack of merchandise.
“There were some delayed shipments, unfortunately,” the employee told shoppers who were searching for tomato basil sauce.
The employee added that most of the new merchandise had already arrived and pointed customers toward the new Chicken Florentine Lasagna.
“It’s amazing,” the employee said while recommending the prepared pasta dish.

The recommendation may have been especially noticeable because so many other prepared pasta options were unavailable at the time.
Some new favorites were still available
Despite the shortages, shoppers did find at least one highly anticipated item in abundance. The store had a large supply of garlic shrimp chips, an Asian-inspired snack that has reportedly been difficult to find at other New York City Trader Joe’s locations after selling out.
For shoppers who managed to find the product, the stocked display offered a rare bright spot during an otherwise frustrating grocery run.
When will the store be fully stocked?
The biggest question for customers was when the Upper West Side location would return to normal inventory levels.
The store first opened its doors in 2010, and employees were unable to provide a precise timeline for when every section would be fully replenished. However, shoppers were told that the situation should improve later in the week.
Until then, customers may want to check other nearby Trader Joe’s locations before making a special trip to the renovated Upper West Side store.
For shoppers who were hoping the reopening would mean a fully refreshed store stocked with their favorite products, the weekend brought a somewhat unexpected experience: a brand-new space, long lines and plenty of empty shelves.
