Nantucket, Massachusetts — A peaceful morning at Great Point Beach turned into a startling wildlife encounter when a great white shark attacked and devoured a seal just feet from the shoreline, with the dramatic encounter captured on video.

Carrie Drayton and her boyfriend were driving past the Nantucket beach around 10:30 a.m. Sunday when they noticed a seal suddenly rushing out of the water. Moments later, the couple spotted shark fins nearby and realized the animal was being pursued.

What happened next was captured on camera, showing the aftermath of the attack as the large shark remained close to shore while feeding on the seal.

Shark Attack Unfolds Near the Shore

The footage shows the great white moving through the shallow water as it tears into what remained of the seal.

The encounter was particularly striking because the shark was only a few feet from the beach, putting the normally distant predator remarkably close to the shoreline. Drayton described the experience as something she never expected to witness during an ordinary drive.

“It was truly wild. I could have reached out and touched it,” Drayton said.

The video also captured another seal farther inland watching the scene before attempting to move closer toward the ocean. Drayton could be heard warning the animal as it approached the water.

“Stay out of the water, dude. You’re gonna get it,” Drayton is heard calling out to the other seal.

The footage offered a rare glimpse of a great white feeding in extremely shallow water, creating a dramatic scene that looked very different from the normally serene setting of Great Point.

Lifelong Nantucket Resident Had Never Seen Anything Like It

For Drayton, the encounter was especially unusual because she has lived on Nantucket her entire life. Despite being familiar with the island and its surrounding waters, she said she had never witnessed anything like the attack.

The chances of seeing such an event appeared incredibly slim to her. Drayton said she would “probably have a greater chance of winning the lottery.”

The timing and location made the sighting particularly memorable. Great Point is known for its beaches and wildlife, but seeing a great white actively feeding on a seal immediately next to the shoreline is not an everyday occurrence.

Experts Say the Shark Was Doing What Comes Naturally

Although the bloody footage may be alarming, experts said the behavior itself is not necessarily cause for concern.

Great white sharks regularly pass through the waters around Nantucket as part of their seasonal movements. The presence of seals also provides a natural food source for the predators.

Fisheries scientist Gregory Skomal told Boston.com that the seals around Great Point represent a “viable source of food” for great white sharks.
