Morgan Hill, California — A 37-year-old Bay Area man was arrested after allegedly leaving his three young children home alone, bringing his gravely injured wife to a San Jose hospital and telling authorities that he had killed her.
Roy Anthony Lopez of Morgan Hill arrived at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose around 9:20 a.m. Saturday, where he allegedly told staff that he had killed his wife.
Hospital employees then went outside to Lopez’s vehicle, where they found an injured woman.
The circumstances surrounding the woman’s injuries remain under investigation as authorities work to establish what happened before Lopez arrived at the hospital.
Police Arrest Morgan Hill Man at Hospital
After Lopez allegedly made the admission, San Jose police officers detained him at the hospital without incident while waiting for officers from the Morgan Hill Police Department.
“SJPD officers detained Lopez without incident until MHPD officers arrived, took him into custody, and transported him to Morgan Hill for questioning. Lopez was later booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on a charge of murder under Penal Code section 187(a),” authorities said.
Lopez is accused of killing his wife, although the investigation remains ongoing and the allegations have not been proven in court.
Authorities have not released additional details about the nature of the woman’s injuries or what may have led to the alleged killing.
Three Children Found Alone at Morgan Hill Home
A preliminary investigation determined that the incident occurred at a residence in the 1100 block of Vintage Lane in Morgan Hill.
When officers went to the home, they found Lopez’s three children, ages 14, 6 and 3, at the residence.
The discovery added another troubling element to the investigation, as authorities determined that the children had been left at home while their father went to the hospital with their injured mother.
The children were subsequently taken to the Morgan Hill Police Department.
Authorities said the children were later “released into the custody of the Santa Clara County Department of Family and Children’s Services.”
Their current condition was not disclosed.
Investigation Into Wife’s Death Continues
The Morgan Hill Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing.
Lopez remains accused of murder under California Penal Code section 187(a) following his arrest.
Authorities have not publicly detailed a possible motive, and investigators are expected to examine what happened inside the Morgan Hill residence before Lopez arrived at the San Jose hospital.
Police are also expected to determine the precise timeline of events, including when the woman’s injuries occurred and what happened before Lopez allegedly brought her to the hospital.
Anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation is being asked to contact Sergeant Sean Bayard at 408-607-3032 or by email at [email protected].
Case Comes Amid Other High-Profile Bay Area Violence
The Morgan Hill investigation comes less than a week after another high-profile shooting occurred elsewhere in the Bay Area.
On Sept. 26, a New York Times executive was fatally shot by his in-laws in a Dublin parking lot, roughly an hour north of Morgan Hill.
That case involved separate circumstances and remains distinct from the Morgan Hill investigation. Authorities had previously reported allegations involving threats against the executive’s wife and her parents, as well as an ongoing custody dispute.
The two cases have no reported connection, but both have drawn attention in the Bay Area because of the serious allegations and the family circumstances surrounding them.
For now, investigators in Morgan Hill are focused on determining exactly what happened at the Vintage Lane residence and what led to the woman’s fatal injuries.
The case remains under investigation, and Lopez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. What questions do you think investigators will need to answer as this case develops? Share your thoughts in the comments.
