Peekskill, New York — On October 9, 1992, an ordinary evening at home turned into an extraordinary encounter with space when a meteorite crashed into an 18-year-old woman’s car, transforming an inexpensive used vehicle into a remarkable piece of scientific history.

Michelle Knapp was watching television at her Peekskill home when a deafening bang interrupted the program. According to the American Museum of Natural History, the noise appeared to come from her driveway. When Knapp went outside to investigate, she discovered that something had smashed through her 1980 Chevrolet Malibu.

What initially appeared to be a case of vandalism soon became an event that attracted scientific attention and international interest.

Police Initially Suspected Vandalism

The damage to Knapp’s car was unusual enough to prompt a police response. According to the Peekskill Herald, officers initially speculated that the incident might have involved “criminal mischief by a very strong male.”

However, the object responsible for the damage did not resemble an ordinary projectile or a piece of debris.

The rock reportedly weighed around 28 pounds, felt warm to the touch and carried a sulfur-like smell. Those unusual characteristics made the discovery even more puzzling.

The following day, a curator at a natural history museum confirmed that the object was a meteorite — a fragment of space rock that had survived its passage through Earth’s atmosphere and reached the ground.

The discovery turned a damaged car in a residential driveway into the center of an unusual scientific story.

A Meteorite Strike That Captured Global Attention

Richard Huff, who worked as a photographer for the Peekskill Herald at the time, later recalled how surprising the event had been.

“I remember thinking at the time this kind of stuff doesn’t happen here. We’ve all seen falling stars, but most people never see where they fall. This was a big deal,” Huff said.

He also reflected on the lasting impact the incident had on the community.

“One thing for sure, the meteorite brought Peekskill a new level of fame and continues to be talked about today where it happened and around the world.”

Meteorites reach Earth’s surface more frequently than many people realize, but a direct strike on a car is an exceptionally unusual occurrence. In this case, the damaged Chevrolet became a tangible reminder of an event that people typically witness only as a brief streak of light across the night sky.

The Peekskill meteorite and the vehicle it struck subsequently attracted attention from museums and collectors.

The Space Rock Became a Collectors’ Item

The meteorite’s scientific significance eventually translated into financial value for collectors interested in owning a piece of the historic fall.

In 2021, a partial slice of the Peekskill meteorite was offered at auction through Christie’s. Described as part of the “blazing fragmenting intruder,” the specimen sold for $4,375 on February 23, 2021.

The auction description highlighted the rarity of the material.

“Specimens of the Peekskill meteorite are difficult to obtain,” the lot’s description read.

It also noted that another portion of the meteorite, together with the car it struck, had been featured on an international museum tour.

The $400 Car That Became a Piece of History

The meteorite was not the only part of the story to acquire unexpected value. Knapp had purchased her Chevrolet Malibu for just $400 shortly before the collision.

After the impact, the vehicle became a distinctive artifact of a documented meteorite strike. Rather than remaining an ordinary damaged used car, it gained recognition for its unusual place in scientific history.

Christie’s highlighted how uncommon it is for a meteorite to strike and dent a vehicle. The car eventually sold for $10,000, a substantial increase over its original purchase price.

The vehicle has also appeared at museums around the world, allowing visitors to see the damage associated with the historic encounter.

More than three decades later, the October 9, 1992, incident remains a memorable example of how an unexpected event can connect everyday life with the wider universe.

For Knapp, a sudden noise outside her home led to a discovery few people ever experience firsthand. For Peekskill, the meteorite brought lasting recognition. And for collectors and science enthusiasts, the rock and the car remain extraordinary reminders that objects from space can sometimes arrive much closer to home than anyone expects.
