Bend, Oregon — A deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School left three children and a teacher dead Thursday after a 16-year-old gunman entered the building and opened fire, according to authorities. The teenager was also killed after an armed community member followed him inside the school and shot him, police said.

The October 15 shooting shocked the Bend community and prompted an urgent response from local law enforcement, emergency crews and school officials. Two other victims, including a young child and a teacher, were reported to be in critical condition following the attack.

How the Shooting Unfolded at Silver Rail Elementary

Police received the first emergency call at approximately 12:59 p.m. Thursday, when a caller reported that someone had fired a long gun at a vehicle near Silver Rail Elementary School.

According to Bend Police Department spokesperson Sheila Miller, additional 911 calls arrived shortly afterward reporting that a gunman had entered the school and begun shooting.

The incident triggered an emergency response as officers rushed to the campus in southeast Bend. Police said officers arrived at approximately 1:02 p.m., just minutes after the first report.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the suspected shooter, a 16-year-old resident of Bend, fired at the school’s locked doors to force his way inside before launching the attack.

The school serves hundreds of children, making the incident especially devastating for families, staff members and the wider community.

Bystander Confronts the Teen Gunman

A community member intervened during the shooting, following the teenager into the school building and shooting him, according to the police account provided after the incident.

The suspect was pronounced dead inside the school. Authorities have not publicly identified the armed bystander in the information available at the time of reporting.

The intervention brought the attack to an end, but investigators are still working to establish the full sequence of events and determine what led to the violence.

Police Chief Krantz said officials were continuing to investigate several unanswered questions. These include details surrounding the shooting, the circumstances of the bystander’s intervention and whether the individual was legally permitted to carry a concealed firearm.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released all the evidence gathered at the scene.

Three Children and a Teacher Killed

Authorities said three children, aged 5, 8 and 11, and one teacher were killed in the shooting.

A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were also reported to have suffered critical injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The deaths have left families facing an unimaginable loss. Officials have not provided further identifying details about the victims in the information released so far.

The school was evacuated as emergency personnel responded and authorities worked to secure the building. Families were directed to a designated reunification location to reconnect with their children.

Investigators continue to examine what happened inside the school and whether the suspect had any connection to the campus. Authorities have not established a motive publicly.

School District Cancels Classes After Tragedy

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steve Cook announced that all schools and activities across the district would be canceled Friday following the shooting.

Crisis counseling was also expected to be available to help students, staff members and families affected by the tragedy. Cook urged community members to support one another as they process the loss and the emotional impact of the attack.

“This is something we never want to happen anywhere, but especially, and particularly, here in our beautiful community in Bend,” Police Chief Krantz said during a news conference.

The superintendent also acknowledged the grief felt throughout the community and encouraged families to spend time together and allow children to express their emotions.

Investigation Continues as Bend Mourns

Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting, including the events leading up to the attack and the circumstances surrounding the gunman’s death.

Questions also remain about the suspect’s motive and the bystander’s actions, including the legal circumstances surrounding the firearm used during the intervention.

The tragedy has left Bend residents mourning the victims while school officials work to provide support for those affected.
