Kissimmee, Florida — A Florida mother is facing four counts of child neglect after authorities allege she left her four children at home without overnight adult supervision while traveling to Las Vegas for work. During her absence, her 9-year-old son reportedly dropped a dumbbell on his head and needed hospital treatment.
According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Irene Miller, 50, was arrested after deputies investigated a report involving the injured child at a home in Kissimmee. The case raised concerns about the children’s supervision while their mother was out of state.
Deputies Respond After Child Reports Injury
Deputies responded at approximately 8:30 p.m. on October 21 to a home in the 3200 block of Parkway Boulevard after a child called to report that her 9-year-old brother had dropped a weight on himself.
When a deputy arrived, the four children, ages 14, 12, 11 and 9, were allegedly at home without an adult present.
The deputy contacted Miller to determine where she was and who was responsible for supervising the children. According to the sheriff’s office, Miller told authorities she was working in Las Vegas.
Investigators said she had left Florida on October 18 and planned to return on October 23.
What Did the Mother Tell Deputies?
According to authorities, Miller said a babysitter would travel from Tampa to help the children get ready for school in the mornings and check on them after school in the evenings.
However, deputies said the babysitter did not stay overnight with the children.
That arrangement became a central issue in the investigation because the children were allegedly left without an adult staying in the home while Miller was away.
Authorities have not provided further details about the babysitter’s identity or whether additional charges related to the supervision arrangements are being considered.
The investigation resulted in four counts of child neglect against Miller, with each count relating to the alleged circumstances involving her children.
How Is the Injured 9-Year-Old Doing?
The 9-year-old boy was taken to a hospital for treatment after the dumbbell incident.
According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, he was later released from the hospital. The other three children were reported to be in good health.

Authorities have not released additional details about the boy’s injuries, including the severity of the head injury or how long he remained at the hospital.
The initial call from one of the children brought deputies to the home, where they discovered the alleged lack of adult supervision.
Mother Arrested After Returning to Florida
Miller was arrested after she allegedly returned to Florida on Friday, according to the information released by authorities. She was taken to the Osceola County Jail and has since posted bond. Her next court date was not immediately listed in the report.
The charges remain allegations, and the case will proceed through the legal system. Any final determination of guilt will be made through the court process.
Sheriff Issues Warning About Child Neglect
Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon addressed the case in a statement emphasizing the agency’s approach to child neglect investigations.
“The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate child neglect. These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children,” Blackmon said.
The sheriff’s office has not announced additional details about the case beyond the information included in its release.
For now, the investigation highlights questions about the children’s care arrangements during their mother’s trip and the circumstances that led to the 9-year-old’s injury.
