Africa is Focus for Peninsula Shops

By Susan Smigielski Acker Leave a Comment

Black History Month may be ending but the wares of Africa can be found year-round in two shops on the Peninsula.

African Images, in Hampton, sells men and women’s clothes, jewelry, lotions, oils and soaps – all imported from Africa.

Owner Audrey Moore decided to open the shop after spending five years in Ghana.

The Menchville High School graduate said the specialty is the shea butter soap and black soap. The shea butter soap works to smooth the skin, she said.

The black soap helps to heal a rash and targets the skin’s problem areas, Moore added.

The shop is located at 5107 Mercury Blvd.

Vicky’s Fashion and Fabrics just opened in December 2021.

Vicky Miller has African clothes, fabric and soon will be carrying lace.

The Ghana native specializes in making custom dresses for all occasions all with African fabrics.

“I don’t use a pattern, I make the dresses from scratch with my design,” she said.

Previously, she sold African fabrics and clothes at a local flea market while working a full-time job. She left her job to open the store.

The Newport News store is located at 10153-L Jefferson Ave.
