By Susan Smigielski Acker Leave a Comment

The holidays get into full swing throughout Newport News with the NlightN Holiday Event Series that includes new holiday décor and lights and familiar favorites.

The Celebration in Lights opens its 28th season on Thanksgiving night (Nov. 26) in Newport News Park. Virginia’s first drive-through holiday light event shines over a million lights to create animated holiday scenes, boasting new upgrades. The event is open each evening from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., through New Year’s Day (Jan. 1). This year, admission is $12 per car Monday – Thursday and $15 per car Friday – Sunday. Additionally, advance tickets (good any night) can be purchased for $10 at the Newport News Visitor Center (open 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.) at the entrance to Newport News Park.

A winter wonderland lights up City Center with NlightN: Gifts of the Season with festive decorations and dazzling lights, Dec. 5 – Jan. 1. Every half hour between 5 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., enjoy a show with lights and falling “snow” set to holiday music. Be sure to take photos at the Instagramable Moments sites around the fountain.

Brooks Crossing will shine with NlightN: Merry Everything! at Brooks Crossing Dec. 5 – Jan. 1, featuring light and sound shows from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Instagramable Moments for the perfect holiday photo.

Holiday Frost at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center is Dec. 11, from 4p.m. – 8 p.m., with additional date to be added later. It is an annual toy and activity bag giveaway, a new virtual film experience, and a new socially-distanced Santa experience. Admission is free, reservations required. For information visit www.downinggross.org.

Visit a Winter Gingerland at The Denbigh Community Center. It is free during normal hours.

Deck the Hall brings the holiday cheer to Newport News City Hall with a new holiday tree, special décor, and enhanced exterior lights illuminating the building.

New this year, Newport News homeowners are inviting, businesses and places of worship to join in lighting up the city by signing up to be a stop on our citywide NlightN: Holiday Tour. Participants can pick up a sign announcing they are part of the NlightN Holiday Tour and they will be included on an online tour map. More details coming soon.
