Help yourself to a cold craft beer or a glass of wine at Newport News’ Beervana in Hidenwood Shopping Center.
There are 42 taps to enjoy various craft brews from local, national and international breweries. Say goodbye to waving down a bartender to get one. It is all self-serve.

Once you arrive you start a tab with a credit card. The cashier will connect a “pour” card to your tab. This card allows you to taste any of the beers or wines, all on tap. You will place your “pour” card in the reader of the beer you’d like to try. A screen shows what your pouring above each tap. Your name is displayed on the screen along with the price per ounce of your selection. This means it is time to pour.
“If you’re not a pouring guru, don’t fret, one of our friendly staff members will be nearby to walk you through the pouring process. With a tip of a glass and flick of the tap you’ll be pouring beer happiness into your glass in a matter of seconds,” noted Sarah Stout, front lead at Beervana.
In addition to beverages, there is a menu of mostly burgers of various types.
“It’s craft beer and craft burgers,” said Mike Buchtel, who owns Beervana with his wife, Denise.
“Once you’ve tried some fantastic local brews and eaten one of our delicious burgers you’ll take that card over to the cashier where they will close out your beer tab. A new beer card is needed for each visit, so you will want to be sure to close out your tab so we can sanitize and reuse the cards,” according to Stout.
The chalkboard artwork was done by Christopher Newport University students Kathryn Grace Scholefield and Jonah Peters. Buchtel said the artwork will be changed periodically.
