World of Shapes at CAN through January

By Susan Smigielski Acker Leave a Comment

The CAN Foundation will present World of Shapes, Artist Dathan Kane’s Solo Exhibition on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.

This is Kane’s largest indoor installation yet, a total of six muraled rooms covering 6,000 square feet in black and white shapes.

Dathan noted, he wanted to create his own version of a “Seeing Shapes Disney World,” a sort of theme park where viewers find themselves enveloped in shapes.

Since the conception of his black and white shapes in 2015, and his first mural adorning a moveable wall at the original 670 Gallery in Hampton 2016, Kane has completed a multitude of Seeing Shapes murals throughout Hampton Roads and Richmond.

Kane completed his first room of shapes entitled GoodTimes in 2020 as the set for the opiate den in the immersive theatrical and concept album preview, Black Spirituals, in which he transcended media with an acting role in the play and performing as a musician on the album.

GoodTimes was followed by an immersive installation at the Hermitage Museum and Gardens, in Norfolk, as a part of the Work in Progress Exhibition.

The exhibition opens Nov. at 7 p.m., and continues until Jan. 22, 2022. CAN Foundation’s HQ is at 9601 Warwick Blvd in Newport News.
