Exploring the mother and son relationship along with grief, life and creation as healing response to physical passing is explored in the upcoming exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Network in Newport News.
The CAN Foundation presents a two-man exhibition featuring new bodies of work entitled ‘The Sunflower Fields’ by First Patron Artist Hampton Boyer and ‘A MTHRNSON’ by Alex Michael. The exhibit runs until Sept. 18.

The multilayered, immersive exhibition will span the first floor of the CAN headquarters, and consist of indoor murals, 2-D and 3-D works of art. Additional programming and public initiatives will honor the artists’ mothers and offer the curative balm of art to communities affected by cancer and loss.
Inspired by afro-futurism, Boyer uses historical references and context to create real world commentary in his simplistic, multimedia works. Boyer has completed multiple murals in the Hampton Roads and other areas of the country.
Michael is a self-taught neo-cubist. His focus is on emphasizing organically deformed features from his personal being and his current surroundings while painting the idea of abstract shapes, revisiting spaces from the renaissance period to 20th century works.
