What is old is new again in Newport News’ Newmarket area with a way to play a variety of sports year-round.
With a big pair of scissors Albert Cousineau and his mother, Rose, cut the red ribbon to HR SportspleX and Event Center in what was once a vacant bowling alley on 79th Street.

The event was co-hosted by the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. Soon after the ribbon was cut, Chamber President and CEO Robert McKenna challenged Newport News Mayor McKinley Price to a pickleball game.
“I didn’t wear the right shoes,” Price answered.
The SportspleX came to be after months of renovations. It offers 160,000 square feet of unique indoor and outdoor space to host almost any private or corporate event. There are two fields for soccer, field hockey and other games, according to Robin Zeman, marketing coordinator
The HR SportspleX will offer year-round sports programs for youth and adults. Pickleball, soccer leagues, and sports camps begin this summer, she added.
In the future, they plan to add an area with video games, a room and patio for adults waiting for their children who are in a game and massage room.
