Newport News will be the center of a feel-good web series being created by Yorktown resident Timothy Meyer, Jr.
The story, set in the 1980s, is about a high school janitor, who at one time was an Atari National Championship contender, that has fallen on hard times. He lost the championship a few years earlier due to cheating by others.
He life turns around when helps several high school students save their charity-backed afterschool club by entering an adult-only, Tri-State arcade tournament. They hope to win money for the club. The question is – will he make it in time? said Meyer.
Somewhere along the way he discovers that if he wins he gets to choose to enter into a national tournament. Only to discover that the big tournament is organized by the same people who cheated to win and ruined his life as a teen in 1977. He decides to enter into the National Tournament and expose the cheaters.
“Exposing the cheaters, restoring his name and helping people along the way is a big through line for this show but it also revolves around playing Arcade games,” Meyer said.
The 1999 Grafton High graduate said he chose to set the show in the 1980s because that is the era he grew up.
“I love the 80’s. I enjoyed that time and understand that time. That is also when video games were new,” he said.
Meyer sees running the series online as an entry way to further his career. His first goal is to have it go beyond the first season. There are seven seasons planned.
Currently, Meyer is writing the story, is researching locations and wardrobe. He is also is looking for producers to help with the project.
