Pulling a Thread at the Torggler

By Susan Smigielski Acker 3 Comments

The Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center, on the campus of Christopher Newport University, presents Flora/Fauna/Fiber: Textiles in Contemporary Art.

Works by 13 artists display “contemporary textile works rooted in the representation and exploration of nature.”

Contemporary art’s current trends challenge commonplace types of fiber art. It is perceived as a feminine hobby and functional artwork.

Among the many pieces featured are massive wall installations and jewel-like pieces.

Also, on display is Kristin Skees: Cozy Portraits, an ongoing portrait series mixing traditional women’s craft, contemporary DIY culture, portraiture, and a love of the unexpected and absurd.

Suspended Animation by Artist Ryan Lyte rounds out the current showing. Ryan Lytle writes in his artist statement, “An homage to my childhood love for cartoons, Suspended Animation is a frozen moment of time in which anvils are suspended by ropes above targets placed on the floor.”
