Nakeya Green took her grief from losing her mom to make young ladies look pretty.
Green founded Queen in a Dress, an organization that provides prom dresses and accessories to young ladies whose families may not be able to afford it.
“My goal is to ensure no young lady does not attend prom simply because she cannot afford the attire in order to attend. Our mission statement is: changing lives one dress at a time,” she said.
Green has been collecting and providing dress for six years to honor her mother who passed away from cancer in October 2016. It was at that time, she realized her mother almost lost their home due to her senior year expenses.
“I never wanted another parent to have to go through that especially in this economy where we are all paying more for everything,” she said.
When she was cleaning out her mother’s home she learned her mother would personal shop for young ladies for prom and back to school things.
“Two young ladies came by to tell me what she had done for them. So, I turned my pain if losing her into purpose,” Green said.
With the help of a friend, she collects items all year. The event will be March 26 at Event Central. Green said she needs volunteers to help the young ladies shop and more.
“We need dresses of all sizes, volunteers immensely to be personal shoppers with the young ladies, we need assistance setting up and taking down the Event. ZRacks to hold the dresses, new makeup, clutch bags, shoes and body sprays. We need continental breakfast items to feed our volunteers such as bagels croissants and fruit, sandwich hoagie trays, juice, soda and water,” Green said.
Items can be donated 200 Piccadilly Loop, Yorktown or the morning of the event at Event Central, 9912 Hosier St., Newport News. To make special arrangement email: queeninadress@gmail.com.
She is also seeking monetary donations to cover the rent for storage. Email Green queeninadress@gmail.com

“Grief is a sudden heartbreak but do remember to hold on tight to the memories. Find the good in everything and never dwell on the bad. The sun’s rays still are there even in the storm. We value all of you that assist with making Queen in a Dress a success,” she said.
She also posted this on Facebook. She should be thanked for doing this for so long for the young ladies.👏🏻🥰👏🏻
