For the first time since 1954 a Virginia Peninsula little league baseball team won the state title. The team of 13 boys ages 10 to 12, of Warwick Little League District Seven, will head to Warner Robbins, Ga., next week for the Southeast Conference playoff.

This is the age group that plays in the Little League World Series which is broadcasted and watched by 26 million people, said Taylor Sherrill, Poquoson Little League President and District Seven Assistant District Administrator
.
They represented District Seven to win six games at States in Vienna with 3-0 record in pool play before advancing through the single elimination bracket round to beat Abingdon, Vienna, and SYA East in the championship game, he said. “The State tournament was hosted by Vienna so that was a crazy game to win!” Sherrill said.
Normally, a team from Northern Virginia earns the rights to represent the commonwealth, Sherrill said.
The Hampton-Wythe team, 1954, was the last Virginia Peninsula team to go this far in the tournament, he noted.
To get to states, they won the district tournament with wins over Phoebus, York County and Poquoson before beating York County in the championship game.
Warwick Little League is one of seven leagues in the District which covers Hampton, Poquoson, Newport News and York County.
In the Southeast Regional, they will play in a double elimination bracket with the eight states in the Southeast Region that include also Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia, according to Sherrill.
The first game is Aug. 6 against Florida’s Martin County North Little League at 1 p.m.
“It’s a double elimination tournament so they’re guaranteed two games for sure,” he said. If they will advance to become the top two teams in the Southeast Conference tournament, they will advance to the national tournament, he added.
Sherrill said the team works well together and support each other. “When you watch them play, you can tell they play well, together, as team,” he said.
Check back here on Aug. 6 (in the evening) find out how the team performed the tournament.
To help offset travel expenses, the team has established a Go Fund Me page.
