Tradition Brewing and their suppliers are brewing a special beer to raise money to help those with visual impairments because the condition has hit close to home.
Tradition Brewing Company Head Brewer Brian Martin suffered a retinal detachment in May. He was sidelined for a while after emergency surgery to stabilize his vision. This was his second retinal detachment and he is now visually impaired in both eyes.

Martin and Greg Fleehart, formerly of Williamsburg’s Precarious Brewing Company and now of Proximity Malt of Wisconsin, created Beer With a Vision to raise funds and awareness for Team With A Vision, a Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MABVI) according to Michele Hansen, events and taproom manager.
Beer With A Vision is being brewed with ingredients and materials donated by Tradition Brewing Company’s suppliers including Hop Havoc, Wine and Beer Supply, Omega Yeast, Proximity Malt, and Blanco Labels, Inc., she added.
Becoming visually impaired has not slowed Martin down now. Martin will be running the 125th Boston Marathon in October with Team With A Vision, including more than 80 blind, visually impaired, and guide runners.
Beer With A Vision is a Hazy Pale Ale, brewed with Citra and El Dorado hops along with tons of Proximity Malted Oats for a silky smooth, juicy mouthfeel and huge citrus and tropical fruit aroma. Beer With A Vision will be available in 4-packs and on draft in Tradition’s Newport News taproom. The proceeds will directly benefit Team With A Vision and MABVI.
