FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — What started as a major delivery problem for a young Florida bakery owner quickly turned into a confusing situation involving nearly 400 cinnamon rolls, an Uber driver and an immigration detention.
Julie Pierre, the 21-year-old owner of Roll and Dough Bakery, had prepared hundreds of cinnamon rolls for sale at the Yellow Green Farmers Market. The baked goods were supposed to arrive at the market, but they never made it to their destination.
When Pierre could no longer reach the delivery driver and had no clear explanation for what had happened to the order, she feared the worst.
The missing shipment represented more than $3,000 worth of baked goods and days of work for the young business owner.
On Aug. 22, Pierre shared her frustration on social media, explaining that the large order had disappeared during an Uber delivery. At that point, she believed the driver, later identified as Ivan Dario Rico Molano, may have taken the cinnamon rolls.
Baker Files Police Report After Delivery Goes Missing
Pierre said the situation left her scared and overwhelmed, particularly because she was running the small business on her own.
“Five days ago, nearly 400 of our cinnamon rolls disappeared during an Uber delivery,” Pierre wrote in a later Instagram update.
She explained that the order had never reached its destination, the carrier could not be contacted and she was unable to get answers about what had happened.
“As a 21-year-old running a small business on my own, I was scared, overwhelmed, and trying to recover days of work and thousands of dollars in products,” she wrote.
Following instructions from Uber, Pierre ultimately filed a police report concerning the missing baked goods. But five days after the original incident, Pierre learned that the disappearance was not what she initially thought.
Police Reveal Uber Driver Had Been Detained
On Aug. 27, the Sunrise Police Department informed Pierre about what had happened to the driver. According to Pierre, authorities told her that Molano had been detained by immigration authorities during the delivery.
A Border Patrol spokesperson said Molano was arrested during a traffic stop in Hollywood. The spokesperson also said the driver, who is a citizen of Colombia, acknowledged that he was in the United States without proper authorization.
Records cited in reports indicated that Molano had entered the United States legally in May 2021, but his authorization period had later expired.
The revelation changed Pierre’s understanding of the situation. What had appeared to be a possible theft was instead connected to the driver’s sudden detention, which prevented him from completing the delivery.
Family Retrieves Vehicle as Cinnamon Rolls Are Returned
Pierre said she later learned that a family member of Molano had retrieved his vehicle after he was detained. The Sunrise Police Department eventually returned the cinnamon rolls to Pierre five days after the original incident.
The bakery owner then issued an update acknowledging that the baked goods had not been intentionally stolen.
Pierre also expressed sympathy toward Molano and his loved ones, saying Roll and Dough Bakery was “deeply sorry for what Ivan and his loved ones are currently experiencing.”
She even offered to help.
Pierre asked anyone with verified contact information for Molano’s family to reach out privately, saying the bakery would like to potentially donate part of its proceeds toward qualified legal assistance for him, with his family’s permission.
Baker Clarifies Police Report Had Nothing to Do With Detention
The story generated significant attention online, prompting Pierre to post another video on Aug. 28 to clarify the timeline. She emphasized that her police report about the missing cinnamon rolls did not cause Molano’s detention.
Pierre said the detention had occurred earlier that day and was entirely separate from her report about the undelivered bakery order.
“I want to make one thing completely clear: I do not support ICE or any policy that separates people from their homes and families,” Pierre said in the caption accompanying her follow-up post.
She also asked people not to blame her for circumstances that were outside her control.
“My heart remains with Ivan and his family,” she wrote.
Pierre encouraged people who were upset by the situation to support affected families and participate in civic action rather than directing blame toward her.
Meanwhile, the immediate business problem has been resolved. Uber reimbursed Pierre for the delivery, and the cinnamon rolls were eventually returned.
What began as a suspected $3,000 theft ended with a very different explanation—one that left the young baker not only relieved to recover her products, but also concerned about the driver and his family.
