Ripley, Tennessee — An 87-year-old woman known for her community service and civil rights activism is recovering after she was allegedly beaten and left seriously injured during a home invasion. She believes the attack may have involved a young person she had recently tried to help obtain clothes for school, according to local news reports.
Dr. Ellena Gooch-Reid was attacked inside her Tennessee home on September 9. On Tuesday, Ripley Police Chief Mitchell Turner announced that arrest warrants had been issued for two suspects: Kevin Harper Jr. and an unnamed juvenile. As of Wednesday, neither suspect had been arrested, according to the report.
The case has raised concerns about violence against older adults, particularly those who live independently and remain active in their communities.
What Happened to Ellena Gooch-Reid?
According to reports, Gooch-Reid was found on the floor of her home in a puddle of blood after the alleged attack.
A police report obtained by the outlet stated that she suffered fractures in her right hand and left arm. Gooch-Reid also told the outlet that she sustained nine wounds to her head, chest and arms.
The injuries were severe enough that she has been in and out of the hospital since the incident. However, reports indicate that she is recovering.
Authorities have not publicly established all the circumstances leading up to the alleged home invasion. Investigators are seeking the two suspects named in the arrest warrants as the case proceeds.
She Believes the Attack May Have Followed an Act of Kindness
Gooch-Reid said she had recently helped a young person obtain clothes for school, something she described as part of her regular community work.
She recalled the events leading up to the alleged attack.
“I had helped someone, a young person, to get some clothes for school, which is one of the things that I do. And I believe he was the one who came into my house and robbed me.”
Her account suggests that she suspects a connection between that act of assistance and the incident at her home. However, her belief is an allegation, and investigators must establish the facts through their investigation.
According to the outlet’s reporting, Gooch-Reid told police she remembered an older man entering her home and striking her in the head with his fist and open hand.
Authorities have not released enough information to establish the complete sequence of events or publicly clarify the roles allegedly played by each suspect.
Two Suspects Face Multiple Felony Charges
Ripley Police Chief Mitchell Turner announced that warrants had been issued for Harper and the unnamed juvenile in connection with the alleged attack.
According to the police chief’s press release, the charges include:
- Attempted second-degree murder
- Aggravated assault
- Especially aggravated burglary
- Especially aggravated robbery
- Aggravated abuse of an elderly person
The charges reflect the seriousness of the allegations, but they remain accusations unless established through the legal process.

As of Wednesday, neither suspect had been arrested, according to the report. Authorities have not announced a completed arrest or provided further details about the next steps in the investigation.
A Civil Rights Activist Who Worked to Help Others
Gooch-Reid has a history of civil rights activism and community service. She previously stood alongside the late Rep. John Lewis, a prominent civil rights leader who spent decades advocating for racial equality and voting rights.
Her efforts to help people in her community have included assisting young people with necessities such as school clothing.
The reported circumstances of the attack have drawn attention to the vulnerability of older residents and the risks they can face inside their own homes.
At 87, Gooch-Reid is now focused on recovering from her injuries while dealing with the emotional effects of the alleged violence.
‘I Am Reliving the Experience Through Nightmares’
The physical injuries are only part of what Gooch-Reid says she has been experiencing since the attack. Speaking about the lasting emotional impact, she said, “I am reliving the experience through nightmares, and that’s hard.”
Her words describe the distress that can continue long after an assault, particularly when the incident takes place in a person’s own home, where they would normally expect to feel safe.
Gooch-Reid’s recovery remains ongoing, and the legal case is still developing. Police have issued warrants for two suspects, but their arrests had not been confirmed in the reporting available as of Wednesday.
Investigators will need to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged home invasion and determine the responsibility of those accused.
