ROSEVILLE, Mich. — A Michigan woman who was killed by her boyfriend in 2023 will never get the chance to see her children grow up after her death led to a murder investigation and, nearly three years later, a life sentence for the man responsible.
Yost, 45, was sentenced to life in prison on Aug. 20 after being convicted of first-degree premeditated murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Lao, 45.
The couple had been dating for only about two months when the fatal attack occurred. The case began on Nov. 13, 2023, when police discovered Lao dead inside a vehicle in Roseville, Michigan.
Yost was found passed out in the driver’s seat, while Lao’s body was in the passenger seat.
Police Discover Woman Dead Inside Vehicle
According to the case details, Lao had suffered significant trauma to her head and face. Authorities determined that she had been beaten to death, and investigators eventually connected Yost to the killing.
The circumstances surrounding the discovery made the case particularly disturbing. Rather than fleeing the area after the fatal attack, Yost remained in the vehicle and was later found unconscious behind the wheel.
Lao was a mother of two, leaving her family to deal with the devastating loss while prosecutors pursued the murder case.
Yost was ultimately convicted of first-degree premeditated murder, resulting in a life sentence.
Defendant Had Previous Domestic Violence Record
Court and Michigan Department of Corrections records show Yost had previously been sentenced in 2015 and 2020 in connection with domestic violence incidents.
Those prior cases add another troubling element to the circumstances surrounding Lao’s death.
Domestic violence can escalate into serious and sometimes fatal violence, and prosecutors emphasized the broader significance of the case following Yost’s sentencing.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said the case demonstrates the devastating consequences domestic violence can have on victims and their families.
Prosecutor Says Justice Has Been Secured
In a press release following the sentencing, Lucido described Lao’s killing as the most tragic possible outcome of domestic violence.
“This is a stark and tragic illustration of the ultimate and worst consequence of domestic violence. Justice has finally been secured in this case,” Lucido said.
He acknowledged that the court’s decision cannot erase the pain experienced by Lao’s loved ones.
“No verdict can undo the profound loss suffered by the victim’s family, but we hope this outcome brings them a measure of peace and closure.”
For Lao’s family, the life sentence marks the conclusion of the criminal case, but it cannot restore the mother they lost. The sentence ensures that Yost will spend the rest of his life in prison for the killing.
