EMERALD ISLE, N.C. — A routine fishing trip at a popular North Carolina pier turned into a medical emergency for a 12-year-old boy when a fishing weight suddenly struck him directly in the eye.
Jayden Singletary was fishing at Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier in Emerald Isle on Aug. 15 when the freak accident happened. According to reports, Jayden was reeling in a fish when the weight unexpectedly came flying back toward him.
“I was reeling in a fish, and it started thrashing at the bottom of the pier, and the weight came back and hit me directly in the eye,” he said.
The impact immediately affected his vision and left him frightened by what he was experiencing.
“It was just nerve-racking to see that I couldn’t see out of my eye whenever I was trying to look around, and I couldn’t do it. It’s pretty weird,” Jayden said.
Emergency Surgery Was Needed
After the egg-shaped fishing weight struck his eye, Jayden was rushed to a hospital, where doctors performed emergency surgery to stabilize the injured eye. The 12-year-old has since returned home to recover, but his ordeal is far from over.
Doctors discovered a small tear beneath Jayden’s retina, an injury that will require additional surgery as he continues his recovery.
The young fisherman knows the road ahead could be long, but he remains hopeful about his future vision.
“I’m just hoping to stay healthy and maybe get a little eyesight back,” he said. “But if not, I’ll be fine. I’m just glad to be alive and being able to walk.”
Young Fisherman Hopes to Return to His Passion
Despite the serious injury, Jayden has not given up on fishing.
He told that he dreams of one day taking part in the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, one of the largest and oldest sport-fishing tournaments in the United States.
For now, however, his focus is on healing.
“I just want it to be over already, but it’s going to be a pretty long healing process,” Jayden told about his Aug. 15 injury.
The accident has also brought emotional challenges for the young boy. Jayden said he worries that other people may make fun of him because of his eye injury.
“I fear people are gonna make fun of me and call me names for now having an eye injury, but I know that God’s gonna heal me and I’m gonna be just fine,” he said.
Family Faces Long Recovery Road
Jayden’s recovery is also creating challenges for his family.
A GoFundMe campaign was created to support Jayden and his single mother as they navigate his medical treatment and recovery. According to the fundraiser organizer, Jayden’s mother may need to be away from work for up to a month so she can remain by her son’s side.
That time will be needed for doctor visits, follow-up appointments and additional treatment as Jayden’s eye continues to heal.
The organizer described the situation as only the beginning of Jayden’s recovery journey and thanked people who have offered prayers and support.
The fundraiser also asked supporters to continue praying for healing, strength and the possibility of Jayden’s eyesight being completely restored.
Jayden Remains Hopeful
For a boy whose life has centered around fishing, the sudden injury has changed what should have been an ordinary day outdoors into a long medical journey.
Yet Jayden remains determined to move forward.
His immediate priorities are recovery and the upcoming medical procedures, but his hope of returning to the activity he loves has not disappeared.
Doctors will continue monitoring his injured eye and determining the next steps in his treatment.
For Jayden and his family, the coming weeks could bring difficult challenges, but they are holding on to hope that his vision may improve and that he can eventually return to the fishing experiences that have meant so much to him.
