BILLINGS, Mont. — A Sunday evening family gathering in Billings ended in a devastating scene of gunfire and flames, leaving eight people dead, including four children, according to authorities.
The Billings Police Department said officers were dispatched shortly after 6:01 p.m. local time on Sunday, Aug. 23, following a 911 call that authorities believe was connected to a family disturbance.
Dispatchers reportedly heard gunfire in the background while the call was underway.
Officers arrived at the home approximately 11 minutes later. Assistant Chief of Police Shawn Mayo said officers heard additional gunshots as they approached the property.
As police moved toward the residence, they saw a man in the backyard and took him into custody. He was transported to a hospital with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound and later died.
The situation became even more dangerous as the home caught fire and quickly became fully engulfed in flames.
Fire and Gunfire Complicated Rescue Efforts
While police were responding to the shooting, the residence became engulfed in fire, bringing Billings firefighters to the scene.
However, authorities faced a dangerous combination of active fire, reports of gunfire and an unsecured scene, making it impossible for emergency personnel to immediately enter the home to rescue or recover victims.
That meant investigators and recovery crews had to wait while the scene was made sufficiently safe.
In an update released Aug. 25, police said investigators now believe four adults and four children were killed during the incident. Authorities are continuing recovery operations inside the damaged residence, which they say has become unstable because of the fire.
The scene is expected to remain active for several more days as crews carefully work through the structure.
Authorities Describe Recovery as Complex
Officials have not yet released the ages, genders or relationships of the victims.
The Billings Police Department described the recovery effort as a “complex process”, citing the condition of the residence and its compromised structural integrity.
A significant number of personnel remain involved in the operation as investigators work to recover victims and preserve evidence.
In a joint statement with the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office, police said no additional information would be released for the time being in order to protect the investigation and ongoing recovery efforts.
Authorities have also not disclosed a motive for the shooting and house fire.

Despite the deadly incident, police said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Residents who were initially evacuated from the surrounding area have been permitted to return to their homes.
Families Identify Four Children Among the Victims
Authorities have not publicly released the identities of those killed. However, local reports said family members and friends identified the victims as Megan Ghekiere; her children, Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12; her children from a previous relationship, Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7; her parents, Dana and Barb Smith; and her grandmother, Evelyn Smith.
Jennifer Mercer, a family friend who created a GoFundMe campaign for funeral expenses and other costs, described the deaths as a “senseless act of violence.”
Mercer said Landon had been preparing to begin his sophomore year of high school.
She described him as a loving and caring teenager who was always willing to help family members and neighbors. According to the fundraiser, he had also been looking forward to getting his driver’s license and was known as a protective older brother.
Charlotte, a seventh grader, was remembered for her love of nature and exploring outdoors. Mercer described the 12-year-old as funny, curious and affectionate, with a love for taking pictures.
Family Gathering Turns Into Unthinkable Tragedy
Another GoFundMe campaign said the family had gathered for what was described as a traditional Sunday dinner before the violence unfolded.
The gathering reportedly included Megan, her children and her parents. For the surviving family members and friends, the loss has left an entire family shattered.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting and fire remain under investigation. Authorities are continuing their work at the heavily damaged home while attempting to establish exactly what happened inside the residence and what led to the deadly violence.
As crews continue the difficult recovery operation, the Billings community is mourning four children and four adults whose lives were lost in a tragedy that authorities say began with a family disturbance and escalated into gunfire and a devastating house fire.
