UPPER POTTSGROVE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A late-night birthday celebration ended in tragedy after a 22-year-old man mistakenly went to the wrong Pennsylvania home and was fatally shot by a responding police officer, according to prosecutors and the man’s family.
Glenwood “Bubba” Pysher IV had been at a bar with friends celebrating a birthday Saturday night, his family told. As the night continued, the group decided to move the celebration to one of their homes.
Pysher chose to walk.
At some point, however, he arrived at a home on Snyder Road in Upper Pottsgrove Township, believing it belonged to his friend. His family says he had been drinking and apparently did not realize he was at the wrong address.
Instead of finding his friends, Pysher found himself at the home of strangers.
Family Says Pysher Was Calling Out for Someone to Let Him In
According to his mother, Erin Pysher, her son approached the back door and began knocking. He reportedly called out, “Hey, let me in,” believing his friends were inside.
But the homeowners did not recognize him and contacted 911 about what was described as a possible attempted break-in. The Upper Pottsgrove Township Police Department was alerted, and officers were sent to the residence.
Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele said at least one officer arrived and found Pysher at the rear of the home.
“An encounter ensued and police fired at [Glenwood] Pysher, fatally striking him,” Steele said. The exact circumstances of that encounter remain under investigation.
Mother Says Her Son Was Unarmed
Pysher’s family says the young man was not carrying a weapon. Erin Pysher told the television station that her son had been communicating with his friends shortly before the shooting.
“At 12:32, he was on his phone with his friends. By 12:35, I believe he was already shot,” she said. According to his mother, only a few minutes passed between those events.
“He was unarmed. Had a cellphone and a book bag,” she said.
The family is now trying to understand how a mistake involving the wrong house escalated into a fatal police encounter. Authorities have not publicly released additional details about what happened during the confrontation, including what led the officer to fire.
Prosecutors Launch Investigation Into Police Shooting
Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele announced that the Montgomery County Detective Bureau is investigating the shooting.
The detective bureau responded to the scene and is handling the investigation in accordance with the county’s protocol for officer-involved shootings.
The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the encounter between Pysher and police, including what officers knew when they arrived and what occurred before shots were fired.
At this stage, authorities have not announced whether any charges will be filed against the officer involved. The incident occurred in Montgomery County, roughly 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia, according to the report.
Family Remembers Pysher as Athlete and Scholar
Away from the circumstances of his death, Pysher’s family and loved ones are remembering him as a young man with a promising future.
A GoFundMe created following his death described him as a “promising young man, athlete, and scholar who loved his family dearly.”
Pysher was reportedly preparing to play baseball at Saint Elizabeth University in New Jersey. His family says baseball was a major part of his life and something that brought him and those closest to him tremendous joy.
The fundraiser highlighted his love of catching baseballs and the pride that brought to his parents and three sisters. For those who knew him, the 22-year-old’s death has now transformed what was supposed to be a simple birthday celebration into an unimaginable loss.
Investigation Into Fatal Shooting Continues
The Montgomery County Detective Bureau’s investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full sequence of events.
The case raises difficult questions about what happened after Pysher arrived at the wrong home and why the encounter with police ended with him being fatally shot.
For his family, the tragedy began with what they describe as a mistake after a night celebrating with friends.
Now, they are left mourning a young man they say had a bright future ahead of him, while investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened in those crucial minutes.
