SAN JOSE, Calif. — A San Jose police officer was shot Tuesday afternoon, triggering a major law enforcement response across the area and sending the wounded officer to a hospital.

The shooting was reported at approximately 12:31 p.m. near Lick Avenue and Goodyear Street, according to San Jose police.

Emergency personnel transported the officer to Valley Medical Center for medical treatment. Authorities had not immediately released details about the severity of the officer’s injuries.

The shooting quickly drew a heavy police presence to surrounding streets as officers worked to secure the area and investigate what had happened.

Heavy Police Presence Reported Near Shooting Scene

As the investigation unfolded, a large number of law enforcement officers were seen in the area.

Police and Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies were reportedly seen with guns drawn near Almaden Avenue and Floyd Street. University police may also have been involved in the broader response.

The heavy police presence raised concerns among residents and witnesses as officers appeared to be searching for a possible suspect.

Witnesses told NBC that they saw an individual lying on the ground during the police response. There were also concerns that a suspect could have barricaded themselves somewhere nearby.

However, police had not confirmed those reports.

Authorities continued working to determine whether the person seen on the ground was connected to the shooting and whether anyone remained inside a nearby location.

Suspect Status Remains Unclear

By approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday, investigators had still not released several key details about the incident.

Police had not publicly confirmed the wounded officer’s condition. Authorities also had not said whether a suspect had been identified, injured or taken into custody.

The lack of information left several major questions unanswered as the investigation continued. It was also unclear what led to the shooting or whether the officer was responding to a specific incident when the gunfire occurred.

Police said additional information would be released when it became available.

San Jose Mayor Plans Hospital Visit

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan was expected to visit the wounded officer at the hospital, according to his office. The mayor’s planned visit came as the department and community awaited more information about the officer’s condition.

The shooting represents a major law enforcement incident for San Jose, with multiple agencies responding and streets around the area seeing a significant police presence.

Investigation Into Officer Shooting Continues

The investigation remains active, and officials have not yet provided a full account of what happened before, during or immediately after the shooting.

For now, authorities are asking the public to rely on confirmed information as investigators work to establish whether a suspect is still at large and what circumstances led to the officer being shot.

The officer’s condition remained undisclosed as of Tuesday evening, while the investigation continued.

More information is expected from police as investigators determine what happened and whether anyone will face charges in connection with the shooting.
