BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — An Illinois family is recovering after a devastating explosion destroyed their home and sent eight family members to the hospital, leaving relatives and neighbors calling their survival nothing short of a miracle.
Firefighters with the Danvers Fire Protection District were called to a home on Old Peoria Court in Bloomington shortly before 12 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, following reports of an explosion and house fire.
Multiple 911 callers reported that people had been burned and injured.
When firefighters arrived, they found the home engulfed in flames. The fire had also spread toward a neighboring property and several vehicles parked between the homes, creating a dangerous situation for first responders and nearby residents.
Eight people were ultimately transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Fire Spreads to Neighboring Property
The explosion caused extensive destruction to the Hoefer family’s home, while the surrounding area was also affected by the intense fire.
Danvers Fire Chief Glenn Rosecrans told 25News Now that a fence helped shield the adjacent house from some of the radiant heat produced by the fire.
As a result, that property sustained exterior heat damage but avoided the same level of destruction as the home where the explosion occurred.
Firefighters worked for hours to bring the fires under control. According to Rosecrans, the explosion-related fires were under control by approximately 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26.
However, the emergency response did not immediately end.
First responders continued working around the destroyed home’s basement because a pipe was still burning. Local utility companies eventually disconnected natural gas and electricity lines in the area to help eliminate additional hazards.
Parents and Children Suffer Serious Burns
Family members and neighbors identified the injured family as Gretchen and John Hoefer, parents of eight children. Seven of the children were reportedly home when the explosion happened.
The parents were hospitalized with major burns, while neighbors told that at least four of the children also suffered significant burns.
One child who was outside when the explosion occurred was not injured.
The family’s eldest child no longer lives at home. Neighbors said he returned from basic training to help his family as they begin the difficult recovery process.
The scale of the injuries has left the family facing a long road ahead, but relatives say doctors expect everyone who was hospitalized to recover.
Grandfather Calls Family’s Survival a ‘Miracle’
John’s parents, Richard and Mary Lu Hoefer, learned about the explosion several hours after it happened. Richard told that the family received a call around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
“We got a call about three o’clock that Wednesday morning… We had just been here the couple days before. I texted with Gretchen then, and 15 minutes later I guess this happened. It was a shock,” Richard recalled.
Despite the severity of the fire, Richard said his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren are expected to make a full recovery. For him, the fact that everyone survived is the most important part of the tragedy.
“The first miracle of God when you look at this site is that nobody died. That’s the protection of God,” the grandfather said.
“And then the fact that all of our family members — there’s eight in the hospital — all of them are projected to make a full recovery.”
Illinois Community Rallies Around Family
As the Hoefer family begins recovering, support has started pouring in from their church and the surrounding community.

The family’s church, East White Oak Bible Church, held a special prayer session Sunday, Aug. 30, and plans to continue supporting the family throughout their recovery.
Neighbors have also been affected by the devastating fire. Ashley McAfee, who lives nearby, told that although her family escaped physical injury, her house was destroyed in the incident.
The local community has rallied around McAfee’s family as well, collecting donations including clothing and meals. The response highlights how the explosion affected more than just the family whose home was destroyed.
Investigation Into Explosion Continues
Several agencies responded to the scene as investigators began working to determine what caused the explosion.
The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, McLean County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, McLean County Emergency Management Agency, Illinois EPA, Nicor Gas and other agencies assisted with the investigation and emergency response.
Officials have not yet released the cause of the explosion.
For now, the Hoefer family faces a difficult recovery, but relatives are focused on what they describe as the most important outcome: all eight hospitalized family members are expected to recover.
The destroyed home and surrounding damage serve as a stark reminder of how quickly a household emergency can turn catastrophic. For the Hoefer family, however, surviving the devastating blast has given them hope as they begin rebuilding their lives.
