RUSK, Texas — A 3-year-old Texas girl is being praised for her remarkable actions after her mother suffered a medical emergency while the pair were home alone.
Noemi “Emi” Vatavuk was the only other person at home when her mother, Aidan Wilkie, experienced the emergency. With no adult nearby to immediately help, the young girl turned to her grandparents for assistance.
According to reports, Emi FaceTimed her grandparents in Georgia, about 700 miles away.
Her grandparents quickly realized something was wrong and contacted 911. What happened next showed just how much the toddler had absorbed from the safety lessons her family had practiced with her.
Girl Stays on Call While Help Is Sent
While UT Health East Texas paramedics were heading toward the apartment, Emi remained connected with her grandparents. They helped her understand what she needed to do while emergency responders made their way to her location.
Her grandparents had previously coached and prepared Emi to get help during an emergency, according to reports. Those lessons became crucial when her mother suddenly needed medical attention.
Wilkie later recalled hearing her daughter during the frightening incident.
“The only thing I do remember from everything was the fact that she was rubbing my hair. I could hear briefly [her saying], ‘Mommy, it’s gonna be okay,’ ” Wilkie recalled.
The simple words offered by the little girl became a powerful reminder of the role she played during the emergency.
Toddler Works to Unlock the Door for Paramedics
Getting emergency responders inside the apartment presented another challenge.
In the 911 recording, Emi’s grandfather told the dispatcher that the toddler was trying to unlock the front door. Because she was so small, Emi stood on a chair to reach the deadbolt. The 911 dispatcher could hear what was happening and encouraged the situation as the girl worked to open the door.
“Oh my goodness. She’s doing so good,” the dispatcher said.
Eventually, Emi successfully unlocked the door. That allowed first responders to enter the apartment and reach her mother. The moment was particularly significant because the toddler was handling a situation that would have been difficult even for an older child.
Paramedics Praise Emi’s Courage
When UT Health East Texas paramedics arrived, they knew they were looking for a very young girl who had been helping her mother. Tim Spurgeon, an EMT with UT Health East Texas, said the crew was repeatedly told that Emi was there.
“We kept getting told, ‘She’s here! She’s here!’ ” Spurgeon told KHOU.

He described the girl’s actions as “Very courageous and very brave.”
For the emergency responders, Emi’s ability to follow instructions, communicate with her grandparents and help provide access to the apartment demonstrated an extraordinary level of composure for someone so young.
Her family’s preparation also appeared to make a difference. The emergency unfolded quickly, but Emi knew that getting another trusted adult involved was important.
Little Hero Receives Special Recognition
After the incident, Emi was recognized for the role she played in helping her mother. During a special ceremony, the 3-year-old received a certificate, a teddy bear and a stethoscope in recognition of her actions.
For Wilkie, however, the official recognition only confirmed what she already knew.
“She is for sure my hero above anything else,” Wilkie said.
Emi’s story has since highlighted the importance of teaching young children what to do when an adult needs help. While no child should be expected to handle an emergency alone, knowing how to call for help, communicate with trusted adults and help first responders gain access can make a critical difference.
