Lauderhill, Florida — A Florida police officer has resigned after being accused of using the identity of a deceased homeowner to take control of his property and spend more than $214,000 on renovations, according to authorities and reports citing court documents.

Brian Sguros, 35, resigned from the Lauderhill Police Department on Tuesday, October 27, following an internal affairs investigation. He is also facing multiple felony charges connected to allegations that he impersonated Dennis West, a 71-year-old man whose body he discovered during a welfare check more than four years ago.

The case is being investigated by the Lauderhill Police Department’s Professional Standards Unit in coordination with the Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office’s Crimes Against Property Unit.

Why Did the Florida Police Officer Resign?

City officials announced Sguros’ resignation after an internal investigation into his alleged conduct. According to the department, he had been placed on paid administrative leave in July while the investigation continued.

Lauderhill Police Chief Constance Stanley emphasized the importance of public confidence in law enforcement following the announcement.

“The trust of our residents is the foundation of everything we do,” Stanley said in a statement. “When residents call us, they are inviting us into their homes and their lives at their most vulnerable moments, and they must be able to trust that every officer who answers that call is there solely to serve them.”

Stanley also said the department would not tolerate conduct that violated that trust and stated that officials would continue to hold department members to high standards of integrity.

Sguros’ resignation followed an investigation that involved both internal police personnel and property-related investigators.

Officer Accused of Taking Over Dead Man’s Home

According to a Broward Sheriff’s Office news release, Sguros was arrested on October 20 in connection with allegations involving West’s identity and property.

Investigators allege that Sguros discovered West’s body during a welfare check at the homeowner’s residence more than four years earlier. West was 71 at the time.

According to an arrest affidavit cited by NBC News, Sguros allegedly represented himself to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office as West’s friend and claimed that the deceased man had no living relatives.

Detectives allege that he subsequently used West’s identity in an effort to gain control of the property for his own use.

Reports citing the arrest affidavit state that Sguros allegedly spent more than $214,000 on renovations at the home over the following years.

The allegations describe a case in which the officer who initially encountered the deceased homeowner later became the subject of a criminal investigation involving the same property.

Allegations Include Forged Documents and Unauthorized Searches

Investigators allege that Sguros used West’s personal identification information to pay property taxes and utility bills in the deceased man’s name, creating the appearance that West was still alive.

Authorities also allege that Sguros forged West’s signature on a building permit issued by the city. According to the arrest affidavit, the investigation includes allegations that Sguros impersonated both the homeowner and a notary, using the notary’s name and seal on a City of Lauderhill building permit application.

The affidavit also reportedly describes the use of a phone to send documents and alleged unauthorized searches of a deceased person’s records through law enforcement databases.

These allegations are part of the criminal case against Sguros. They have not been established as proven facts in court.

Multiple Felony Charges Filed Against Sguros

Sguros faces charges including official misconduct, criminal use of a deceased person’s personal identification information, criminal use of personal identification information, an offense against users of computers and unlawful use of a two-way communications device.

The charges relate to allegations involving the deceased homeowner’s identity, property documents and the use of law enforcement resources.

The case also prompted an internal review by the Lauderhill Police Department to examine the officer’s alleged conduct.

Authorities have not established through a court verdict that Sguros committed the alleged offenses. The charges remain allegations, and the criminal proceedings will determine the outcome.

How the Investigation Began

According to the latest city announcement, the investigation initially began on May 27 after the Lauderhill Police Department received a complaint concerning a residential property.

The department’s Professional Standards Unit subsequently worked with the Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office’s Crimes Against Property Unit as investigators examined the allegations.

Sguros was placed on paid administrative leave in July, in accordance with city protocol, before his arrest on October 20 and resignation on October 27.

The case has since drawn attention because of the connection between the original welfare check and the allegations involving the homeowner’s identity and residence.

As the criminal case proceeds, further developments may clarify the evidence surrounding the property, the alleged financial transactions and the documents investigators say were improperly used.
