DARIEN, N.Y. — A family outing in upstate New York turned into a devastating tragedy when an 11-year-old boy was killed after the go-kart he was driving overturned into a nearby pond.

Parker Mitchell was driving the go-kart with his 8-year-old sister, Teagan, in Darien, New York, last Sunday when the vehicle rolled over into the pond at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The accident quickly became an emergency as the go-kart landed on top of Parker, leaving the child pinned underwater.

First responders rushed to the scene and worked to get the boy out of the water. Parker was eventually pulled from the pond and transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

The tragedy happened only days before Parker was expected to begin middle school, making the loss even more painful for his family and community.

Sister Escapes the Wreck

Parker’s younger sister, Teagan, was also involved in the accident but was able to escape from the wreck. Local authorities said the 8-year-old was treated at the scene before being reunited with her family.

While Teagan survived the frightening incident, her family was left facing the devastating loss of Parker.

The circumstances surrounding exactly how the go-kart overturned and entered the pond have not been fully detailed in the information released about the accident.

The incident has nevertheless left a family and community mourning the loss of a child whose life was remembered for his personality, athletic interests and love for those around him.

Parker was also remembered for the things he enjoyed in everyday life. He was a Buffalo Bills fan and loved playing video games. His family also said he enjoyed spending time outdoors and in nature.

Those interests, along with his athletic activities and close relationships with friends and relatives, formed part of the life his family is now trying to remember following the sudden tragedy.
