Port Hueneme, California — A California man is headed to prison after deliberately driving his Lexus into a group of bicyclists, killing a 16-year-old boy and seriously injuring two others before fleeing the scene, according to prosecutors.
The case involves 33-year-old Rocha, who was sentenced Wednesday in connection with the death of Pedro Valdez, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office announced. Rocha pleaded guilty in August to second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
The deadly collision happened in April 2021 and was part of a series of violent incidents involving Rocha that day. Prosecutors said he intentionally steered his vehicle toward a group of seven cyclists riding in Port Hueneme.
Lexus Driver Deliberately Struck Group of Seven Cyclists
The incident happened on April 19, 2021, near Pleasant Valley Road and Ventura Road in Port Hueneme, approximately 60 miles west of Los Angeles.
According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, Rocha encountered a group of seven bicyclists traveling along the roadway. For reasons not detailed in the prosecutor’s announcement, he made what authorities described as a deliberate decision to steer his Lexus into the group.
The collision killed 16-year-old Pedro Valdez and struck four other bicyclists. Two of those injured suffered serious injuries. Rather than stopping to help the victims, Rocha left the scene and drove to his mother’s apartment complex, prosecutors said.
A witness reportedly followed him after the collision and contacted police. Responding officers subsequently located Rocha and arrested him.
Investigation Uncovered Another Violent Incident
As investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision, they learned that Rocha had allegedly been involved in another violent incident approximately 10 minutes before striking the bicyclists.
That earlier incident happened at a laundromat, where Rocha assaulted a man and a woman, according to prosecutors. Authorities also said he intentionally struck an employee with his vehicle in the laundromat parking lot.
The earlier incident later resulted in a separate criminal case. In April, a jury convicted Rocha of four counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of battery.
The convictions added another layer to the case, which involved multiple victims and two separate incidents occurring within a short period.
Rocha Pleaded Guilty in Teen Cyclist’s Death
In the case involving Pedro Valdez, Rocha pleaded guilty in August to second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon. His sentencing Wednesday marked a significant development in the criminal proceedings following the 2021 collision.
Ventura County prosecutor Richard Simon addressed the loss of life and the impact of the incident in a statement released by the district attorney’s office.
“A tragic loss of life occurred because of Mr. Rocha’s actions,” Simon said.
“While his acceptance of responsibility is an important step, it cannot undo the devastating consequences of his actions. Pedro Valdez is missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
The prosecutor’s statement recognized the consequences of the crash for Pedro’s family, friends and the wider community.
Pedro Valdez Remembered by Friends and Classmates
Following the teenager’s death, one of Pedro’s classmates shared a tribute on a GoFundMe page, remembering him as someone who brought happiness and support to the people around him.
“Pedro was a selfless and bright young man, he was the light in a dark room, he was caring kind and always knew how to make others feel better. He was an amazing friend and he will be missed dearly by everyone who cared for him,” she wrote.
The tribute highlighted the personal loss experienced by those who knew the teenager beyond the circumstances of the fatal collision.
Deadly California Crash Case Reaches Sentencing
The case began with a collision that killed a teenager and injured other members of a cycling group. Investigators later connected the driver to an earlier violent incident, leading to additional criminal proceedings.
Rocha’s guilty plea in the murder case and the separate jury convictions for the laundromat incident brought the two cases into focus.
For Pedro Valdez’s loved ones, the sentencing marks another chapter in a case that began with his death on April 19, 2021. The tragedy also left a lasting impact on the other cyclists who were struck that day and the people who witnessed the incident.
