HIALEAH, Fla. — A 10-year-old girl’s account of what she said happened at home has led to the arrest of her mother after a child protective investigator reportedly noticed injuries on the child at her school.
According to an arrest report, the girl told the investigator that her mother, Gineth Ramirez, punished her by tying her up and burning her.
The allegations came to light after the child protective investigator was called to the girl’s school in Hialeah.
The investigator reportedly observed what appeared to be first-degree burn marks on the child’s right forearm, right shin and upper right thigh.
The girl allegedly told the investigator that Ramirez burned her because she misbehaved. She also described being made to sit on a brown chair while her hands were allegedly restrained behind her with either rope or handcuffs.
The allegations prompted detectives to investigate further.
Mother Gives Detectives a Different Explanation
When detectives questioned Ramirez about her daughter’s injuries, the mother allegedly offered a very different explanation. According to the arrest report, Ramirez claimed that the child had suffered one of the burns while the two were making flan together.
Ramirez allegedly told investigators that her daughter wanted to eat some of the dessert while it was still hot. She said she handed the girl a spoon containing flan and instructed her to blow on it because of the temperature.
According to the report, Ramirez said the girl did not take the spoon and that the flan instead fell onto her leg, causing one of the injuries. However, investigators reportedly said Ramirez could not explain the other two marks observed on the child’s body.
That discrepancy became an important part of the investigation as detectives attempted to determine how the girl’s injuries occurred.
Police Question Claims About Punishment
Ramirez also allegedly denied using corporal punishment against her daughter.
According to the reports, she told detectives that she sometimes made the child sit on a chair and face the wall when she misbehaved, but denied tying the girl’s hands.
Ramirez reportedly told police that she had never tied her daughter’s hands with rope or handcuffs. The conflicting accounts left investigators with the child’s allegations on one side and the mother’s denials on the other.
The arrest report cited by local outlets details the girl’s account of being restrained and burned as punishment, while Ramirez’s version disputed those allegations and attributed at least one injury to an accident involving flan.
Ramirez also has a 2-year-old son, according to the reports.
Florida Mother Faces Serious Child Abuse Charge
Ramirez was booked into jail on Thursday, September 10, and charged with aggravated child abuse causing great bodily harm, according to jail records.
The charge is classified as a first-degree felony in Florida, reflecting the seriousness of the allegations against her.
The case stems from the child’s statements to authorities and the injuries reportedly documented during the investigation.
As with any criminal case, the allegations against Ramirez remain accusations unless proven in court. The arrest and charging documents represent the claims made by investigators and prosecutors, while Ramirez is entitled to due process.
Authorities have not indicated that the case has been resolved.
