Greeneville, Tennessee — A rent dispute between two stepbrothers ended in a fatal confrontation outside a Greeneville home, and more than a year later, Perry Lamont Schoolfield Jr. has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing 30-year-old Isaiah R. Bowden.

Schoolfield, 33, pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder in connection with Bowden’s April 2025 stabbing death. Following the plea, 3rd Judicial District Judge John F. Dugger Jr. imposed the maximum sentence permitted under Tennessee law. Schoolfield was also credited with 160 days he had already spent in pretrial detention.

Fatal Confrontation Began Over Rent

The deadly incident happened on a Thursday night in April 2025 at a residence on North Sunset Street in Greeneville, a community about 30 miles west-southwest of Johnson City.

According to an affidavit cited by local authorities and news outlets, police responded to the residence and found Bowden suffering from a stab wound to his upper body.

Investigators alleged that Schoolfield had waited for his stepbrother to leave the residence before confronting him as he approached his vehicle.

Witnesses told investigators that Schoolfield said:

“I am here to kill you,”

The confrontation then escalated into a physical struggle. Schoolfield ultimately stabbed Bowden in the chest. Emergency responders transported Bowden to Greeneville Community Hospital, where he died from his injuries later that same day.

Dispute Traced Back to a Shared Home

The conflict reportedly centered on rent money connected to a residence the two men had shared in Blountville.

Bowden was in Greeneville visiting his girlfriend when Schoolfield confronted him about the dispute. What began as an argument eventually turned physical outside the residence, ending with the fatal stabbing.

The case was especially painful for the families because the victim and defendant were stepbrothers.

During Friday’s sentencing hearing, prosecutors and defense attorneys reportedly described the incident as an unusual and tragic event. They also expressed the belief that Schoolfield was remorseful about what had happened.

Isaiah Bowden Remembered as “Zeek”

Bowden was known affectionately as “Zeek” to his friends and family.

His obituary remembered him as an adventurous and creative person who enjoyed traveling and creating music and videos. It also highlighted the importance of his role as a father to his son, Rian.

The obituary stated:

“From a young age, Isaiah was adventurous, traveling to various cities and states, soaking in the experiences that shaped him,” the eulogy reads. “A true creative at heart, Zeek saw himself as a superstar, pouring his energy into his music and videos, which can be found on YouTube—a testament to his artistry and vision. Above all, Isaiah cherished his family. He took immense pride in being a father, ensuring that his son, Rian, was always cared for and loved. He was a protector, a dreamer, and a man who lived life on his own terms.”

The description offered a picture of Bowden beyond the circumstances of his death, emphasizing his creativity, family and relationship with his son.

Judge Calls the Case Sad

At the sentencing hearing, defense attorney Hunter Shelton spoke about the effect of the killing on both families.

“This was a tragic case involving two brothers, and there are no words that can adequately express the loss and pain involved for all family members,” Shelton told WGRV.

Judge Dugger also described the situation as sad, according to the radio station’s account.

Rather than focusing only on the punishment, the judge encouraged Schoolfield to make productive use of his time in prison. Dugger told him to “stay out of trouble and do what he could while behind bars to work on his education.”

Father Given a Final Moment With His Son

The emotional nature of the hearing was especially apparent as the proceedings came to an end.

Judge Dugger allowed Schoolfield’s father to exchange a few words with his son before Schoolfield was taken away to begin serving his sentence. Because of court security arrangements, the two men remained approximately eight feet apart.

Schoolfield will now serve the 25-year sentence imposed after his guilty plea.

The case that began with a dispute over rent ultimately resulted in the death of a 30-year-old father and a lengthy prison sentence for his stepbrother.
