Houston, Texas — A 5-year-old girl was killed after someone opened fire on the vehicle carrying her and her family, leading to the arrest of a 47-year-old Texas man who now faces a capital murder charge, authorities said.
Jeremy Porter was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail after investigators identified him as the suspect in the shooting death of Zah’Layah Walter. Authorities said evidence gathered during the investigation, including information from automated license plate readers, helped detectives identify Porter.
He was taken into custody less than 24 hours after the shooting, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
5-Year-Old Girl Killed Inside Family Vehicle
The shooting happened Saturday night in northwest Harris County, where Zah’Layah was traveling with her mother and four siblings.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the family was inside their vehicle when another person opened fire. Multiple bullets struck the vehicle, fatally injuring the young girl.
Her mother, Monica Hicks, later described the terrifying moments to local news outlet KHOU. Hicks said she had been driving home from her mother’s house with her five children when the gunfire began near Grant Road and Jones Road.
“All my kids in the back seat were screaming, and they continued to shoot in my car. And I did not know my daughter was hit until I pulled into my apartment,” Hicks said.
The mother only realized her daughter had been struck after she reached her apartment.
Investigation Quickly Leads to Suspect
Investigators immediately began working to determine who was responsible for the shooting.

Authorities said automated license plate reader information and other evidence helped investigators identify Porter as a suspect. He was arrested within a day of the deadly shooting and subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail.

Porter has been charged with capital murder, but the charge is an allegation, and the case will proceed through the criminal justice system.

For Hicks, the realization that her daughter had been hit came only after she had driven away from the shooting scene and reached her apartment.

On Tuesday, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office addressed the killing and the arrest in a statement shared on social media. The agency wrote:
“We stood alongside the family of 5-year-old Zay’Layah Walter, whose life was tragically taken in a roadway-related shooting. The person accused of taking her life has been arrested,”
The sheriff’s office added:
“We remain committed to seeking justice for [Zah’Layah] and supporting her family.”
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not indicated that the case is over simply because an arrest has been made. The shooting also highlights the devastating consequences that roadway gunfire can have when innocent people are caught in the middle.
