Santa Cruz, California — A couple in their 30s was swept off rocks and into the freezing Pacific Ocean Tuesday afternoon at a notorious Northern California beach, triggering a dramatic rescue operation that was captured on video.

The pair had been fishing on the rocks at Panther Beach in Santa Cruz County when powerful waves suddenly pulled them into the ocean. Rescue swimmers from the Santa Cruz Fire Department and California State Parks Public Safety responded as officials worked to bring the injured couple back to shore.

Dramatic footage showed rescuers pulling the pair from the water before emergency crews began performing compressions on the sand.

Dramatic Rescue Unfolds at Panther Beach

Video released by NBC showed the scale of the rescue effort as multiple agencies converged on the beach.

Rescue swimmers entered the water and used lifeguard equipment to bring both patients toward shore. On the cliff above the beach, an official could also be seen using binoculars while people helped direct rescuers toward the couple.

Both victims received emergency medical treatment at the scene before being transported from the beach. CAL FIRE’s Michael Horn described how quickly emergency crews responded.

“First on scene was CAL FIRE and they responded from a fire station that’s just north here, near Davenport. After that, Santa Cruz City Fire Department and California State Lifeguards came here very quickly and they all kind of converged on the scene at the same time,” CAL FIRE’s Michael Horn told independent reporter Chris Cerney.

The rescue involved multiple agencies working together to reach the couple and move them away from the dangerous shoreline.

Both Patients Were Pulled From the Water

Horn said rescue swimmers were able to reach both victims and bring them out of the water using lifeguard rescue equipment.

“Both patients were brought in by rescue swimmers with a lifeguard tube around their torso and they swam in by the swimmers. Both patients, once they were transported up to the cliff here off the beach by a helicopter, one was brought to a nearby trauma center and the other was transported by ambulance,” he added.

The couple was then transported for further medical care. Horn later said paramedics were able to restore pulses in both patients while they were being transported to the hospital.

One of the victims was reportedly talking while being taken to Dominican Hospital, offering an encouraging sign following the frightening incident.

The identities and current conditions of the two victims were not immediately released.

Panther Beach Area Has Seen Previous Tragedies

Tuesday’s incident comes only months after several other deadly incidents along the same stretch of Northern California coastline. In June, two college students died after being swept into the ocean at nearby Bonny Doon Beach, located roughly a mile from Panther Beach.

The victims were identified as Harshita Nair, 21, and Mahial Sran, 20, who died June 10 after waves swept them into the sea.

According to reports, the two students had been napping near a keyhole area of the beach when powerful waves suddenly carried them out into the ocean.

Another fatal incident happened just days earlier.

On June 6, a man died after falling from a cliff into the ocean at Bonny Doon Beach, adding to concerns about the dangers along the rugged coastline.

Powerful Waves Remain a Serious Coastal Hazard

The latest rescue once again highlights the risks faced by people who venture onto rocks near the water along Northern California’s coastline.

Large waves can arrive unexpectedly, particularly around rocky areas where people may have limited escape routes. A seemingly calm stretch of shoreline can quickly become dangerous when a powerful wave reaches farther inland than expected.

The fact that Tuesday’s couple was reportedly fishing on the rocks underscores how quickly conditions can change for people standing close to the ocean.

For emergency crews, reaching victims in these locations can also be extremely difficult because of steep cliffs, rocky terrain and powerful surf.

The successful rescue required firefighters, lifeguards, rescue swimmers, paramedics and helicopter crews to work together under dangerous conditions.

The couple’s rescue also comes as a reminder of the dangers along this section of the Santa Cruz coastline, where multiple people have been swept into the Pacific in recent months.
