Lancaster, Pennsylvania — Pennsylvania has reported its fifth measles-associated death of 2026, adding to a growing outbreak that has now reached 943 reported illnesses across 39 counties as the United States experiences its worst year for measles in decades.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health said Wednesday that the latest person who died was an unvaccinated resident of Lancaster County who had tested positive for measles. The department did not release additional information about the person, citing privacy concerns.

Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni said his office did not handle the death and that state officials had not provided him with further details.

Fifth Death Reported in Pennsylvania

The latest death is the fifth measles-associated fatality reported by Pennsylvania health officials during the current outbreak.

The state’s previous deaths included an 18-year-old from Mifflin County, a 40-year-old woman from Jefferson County and two infants from Lancaster County.

According to the state health department, none of those individuals had been vaccinated against measles. The two infants were too young to receive the recommended vaccinations.

The new death adds another grim development to an outbreak that has continued spreading across Pennsylvania throughout the year. State health officials say the five measles-associated deaths are the first reported in Pennsylvania in 35 years.

Measles Cases Reach 943 Across 39 Counties

Pennsylvania’s outbreak has continued to expand, with 943 measles illnesses reported so far this year across 39 counties.

The increase comes as measles activity has surged nationally. The United States has now recorded eight reported measles-associated deaths over the past two years, according to the information provided by state officials and reporting on the outbreak.

That total exceeds the combined number of reported measles deaths during the previous three decades.

The national outbreak has also pushed measles back into the spotlight after years of relatively limited domestic transmission.

U.S. Had Eliminated Domestic Measles Spread in 2000

The United States declared measles eliminated from ongoing domestic transmission in 2000, following years of high vaccination coverage and public-health efforts to prevent the disease from spreading.

That status depended heavily on maintaining high levels of community immunity.

Health officials have warned that vaccination coverage has fallen below the 95% level generally needed to prevent sustained measles outbreaks, creating more opportunities for the highly contagious virus to spread when it enters communities.

The recent rise in infections has raised concerns about whether the country’s previous progress against measles can be maintained.

Measles-Free Status Could Face International Review

The growing outbreak could have consequences beyond individual states.

International health officials are expected to meet in November to determine whether the United States and Mexico have lost their measles-free status.

Such a review would represent a significant moment for the region after years of progress toward controlling domestic transmission of the disease. For Pennsylvania, however, the immediate concern remains the continuing spread of measles inside the state.

Lancaster County has been one of the major centers of the outbreak, and the latest fatality again highlights the serious consequences associated with measles infections.

Health Officials Continue Watching the Outbreak

Measles is highly contagious, and outbreaks can expand quickly when the virus reaches communities with insufficient vaccination coverage.

The Pennsylvania outbreak has already spread across 39 counties, while the state continues tracking new cases and responding to the ongoing transmission.

The fifth reported death also comes as national measles activity reaches levels not seen in decades.

With cases continuing to be reported and the U.S. facing a potential review of its measles-free status later this year, health officials are closely watching whether the current outbreak can be brought under control.
