Brooklyn, New York — A 72-year-old driver has been arrested eight months after former Nickelodeon star Kianna Underwood was fatally struck by vehicles while crossing a Brooklyn street, authorities said.

Michael Griffiths was arrested Tuesday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and leaving the scene of an accident with injury, according to the NYPD.

Underwood, 33, was killed around 6:50 a.m. on Jan. 16 in the Brownsville neighborhood after she was struck by two vehicles while crossing near Watkins Street and Pitkin Avenue.

Surveillance Video Captured the Fatal Crash

Surveillance footage obtained by The Post showed Underwood crossing the street against the traffic signal when a Ford SUV crossed the double yellow line to pass a stopped vehicle.

The SUV struck Underwood in the crosswalk, sending her across the intersection.

A second black-and-gray sedan then struck her, according to police sources. The vehicle allegedly dragged Underwood several hundred feet before fleeing the area.

Underwood was eventually found near Osborn Street and Pitkin Avenue suffering from severe trauma. Police and emergency personnel responded to the scene, but Underwood was pronounced dead at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the second vehicle and the driver’s actions remain part of the investigation.

Griffiths Previously Said He Did Nothing Wrong

Griffiths had previously spoken publicly about the crash before his arrest. In late January, he told the New York Daily News that he remembered hitting “something” when his 2021 black Ford Explorer struck Underwood.

However, Griffiths insisted that he had not done anything wrong.

“At the time it was a little bit darkish. I was going to work…It felt like I hit something, and I pulled over and stopped,” he told the publication.

Griffiths said he stopped after the initial collision and saw another vehicle strike Underwood. He also said he witnessed the second vehicle dragging the person and attempted to get the driver’s attention with other people at the scene.

“I saw another car hit the person and started dragging the person,” he told the Daily News.

According to Griffiths, the second vehicle continued away from the area despite efforts by people nearby to stop it.

Driver Said He Left to Take His Medication

Griffiths also told the newspaper that he eventually left the area because he needed to take his medication. He said he “felt like I was going to faint when the incident happened.”

His vehicle was later impounded by police as investigators worked to determine what happened during the deadly collision. Records cited in the report showed the Ford Explorer had previously received 41 violations, including 25 speeding violations.

The arrest now comes months after the fatal crash and follows the lengthy investigation into Underwood’s death.

Kianna Underwood Had Been a Nickelodeon Child Star

Underwood was known to television audiences from her childhood acting career.

She appeared during the final season of Nickelodeon’s popular sketch-comedy series “All That” in 2005, joining a cast known for its comedy sketches aimed at younger viewers.

Her death brought renewed attention to her later life in Brooklyn, where she had reportedly been experiencing homelessness and had become a familiar presence in the Brownsville neighborhood.

The circumstances of her death have remained a painful part of the community since the January crash.

Arrest Comes Months After Fatal Collision

Griffiths now faces charges related to leaving the scene of the crash.

The arrest represents a significant development in a case that began with a deadly early-morning collision and remained under investigation for months.

The case also highlights the difficulty of investigating hit-and-run crashes involving multiple vehicles, particularly when investigators must determine the sequence of events and the actions of each driver.

As the legal process moves forward, the charges against Griffiths are allegations, and the case will proceed through the court system.
