Brooklyn, New York — A 54-year-old man arrested on drug charges died Sunday, one day after experiencing a medical episode while being held at an NYPD precinct in Brooklyn, according to police.
Reginald Newkirk was being detained at the 67th Precinct in Flatbush while awaiting a transfer to criminal court for his arraignment when his condition suddenly worsened, the NYPD said.
Emergency responders took Newkirk to a local hospital shortly before 2:15 p.m. Saturday after he became ill while in custody. Police said the illness was unspecified.
Newkirk remained hospitalized overnight before he was pronounced dead Sunday. His cause of death has not yet been determined.
Newkirk Was Awaiting Court Arraignment
Newkirk, who was from Brooklyn, had been arrested Friday on a charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to court records.
He was being held at the 67th Precinct as authorities prepared to transfer him to criminal court for an arraignment.
Police said Newkirk experienced a medical episode while detained, prompting emergency responders to take him to the hospital for treatment. Details about the exact nature of the medical episode have not been released.
Authorities have also not disclosed whether Newkirk had any known underlying medical conditions or what specifically caused his health to deteriorate.
His death remains under investigation as officials work to establish what happened before and after he was taken to the hospital.
NYPD Force Investigation Division to Investigate
The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division will investigate Newkirk’s death, police said.
The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the medical episode, the response inside the precinct and what happened after Newkirk was transported to the hospital.
Because the cause of death remains unknown, officials have not indicated whether the death was connected to the circumstances of his arrest or detention.
The medical examiner will ultimately play a key role in determining the cause and manner of death. For now, police have released only limited details about the circumstances leading up to Newkirk’s hospitalization.
Death Follows Other Custody Medical Emergencies
Newkirk’s death comes amid several other recent deaths involving people in NYPD custody or detention facilities.
A 46-year-old detainee died Sept. 9 after suffering a medical episode inside the Central Courts Building in Downtown Brooklyn, according to a report cited by AMNY.
Earlier this year, two other people also died after experiencing medical complications while in NYPD custody.
In April, Hector Sierra, 51, and Zamiqua Miller, 33, both died after suffering withdrawal symptoms in police custody, according to police.
Those cases, along with Newkirk’s death, highlight the importance of determining how medical emergencies involving people in custody are identified and handled.

However, the circumstances surrounding each death are different, and investigators must establish the specific facts in each case.
Cause of Death Remains Unknown
At this stage, authorities have not announced what caused Newkirk’s death.
Police said he was taken to the hospital after experiencing an unspecified illness, where he remained until his death the following day.
The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division will now examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As investigators work to determine what happened, additional information could emerge from medical records, witness accounts and the medical examiner’s findings.
For Newkirk’s family and those who knew him, the investigation could provide important answers about what led to his sudden medical decline while he was being held at the Brooklyn precinct.
