New Orleans, Louisiana — A passenger arriving at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport was allegedly missing something worth nearly $80,000 after his luggage arrived with a damaged zipper, leading police to two baggage handlers accused of stealing his luxury watch.

Thaddeus Porter, 42, and Morris Robinson, 18, were arrested after investigators allegedly determined that the pair had taken a Patek Philippe Aquanaut valued at $79,050 from the traveler’s luggage, according to authorities and court records.

The passenger had flown from Los Angeles to New Orleans on Sept. 24 when the expensive timepiece allegedly disappeared from his checked bag.

Traveler Notices His Bag Was Damaged

The alleged theft came to light after the traveler collected his luggage at the New Orleans airport. According to investigators, the man told police that he noticed his bag had been ripped along the zipper when he received it.

When he checked inside, his luxury Patek Philippe watch was missing. The watch, a Patek Philippe Aquanaut valued at $79,050, immediately became the focus of the investigation.

Because the item was extremely valuable and the luggage appeared to have been opened or damaged, authorities began looking into how the watch could have disappeared while the bag was being handled.

Security Footage Leads Police to Two Suspects

Investigators with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office reviewed security-camera footage as part of the investigation. According to authorities, the footage helped investigators identify Porter and Robinson as the alleged thieves.

Police said both men worked handling baggage for the airline used by the traveler.

Their connection to the baggage-handling operation reportedly gave them access to luggage moving through the airport, including the passenger’s bag.

The investigation ultimately led authorities to the two suspects, who were arrested on the same day the alleged theft was reported.

The case highlights the challenges travelers can face when valuable belongings are placed inside checked luggage, particularly when bags pass through multiple stages of airport handling.

Suspects Face Felony Theft Charges

Porter and Robinson were booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Facility following their arrests. Both were charged with felony theft valued at more than $25,000, according to court records.

The charge reflects the exceptionally high value of the watch allegedly taken from the passenger’s luggage. Authorities have not indicated in the provided court information whether the Patek Philippe was recovered.

The investigation and criminal case will determine what happened to the watch after it was allegedly removed from the traveler’s luggage.

Two $25,000 Bonds Were Posted

Court records show that the suspects remained in custody following their arrests before posting bond. According to the records, Porter and Robinson each posted a separate $25,000 bond the following day.

The arrests do not mean the two men have been found guilty. They remain accused of the alleged theft, and the case will proceed through the court system.

For the traveler, however, the incident turned an ordinary flight from Los Angeles into a costly and unusual airport ordeal.

A watch worth nearly $80,000 was allegedly taken from inside his luggage, and investigators say security footage ultimately helped point them toward two people who had access to the bags.

The case also serves as a reminder of the risks involved in placing high-value items in checked baggage, particularly when those belongings can be difficult to replace.
