Fayetteville, North Carolina — Hurricane Isaias produced a series of tornadoes across parts of the Southeast, with the National Weather Service confirming 18 twisters as damage surveys continued following the storm’s passage through Georgia and the Carolinas.

The confirmed tornadoes included five EF2 tornadoes, which are capable of causing considerable damage to buildings, trees and vehicles. Investigators documented significant destruction at several locations in North Carolina, including damage to commercial properties, collapsed light poles and vehicles overturned in parking lots.

Although the tornadoes caused substantial property damage, officials reported that no deaths or injuries were attributed to the confirmed tornadoes. Hurricane Isaias itself, however, was associated with as many as eight fatalities, according to the information provided in the initial report.

National Weather Service Confirms 18 Tornadoes

The National Weather Service (NWS) began surveying damage after tornado reports emerged during Hurricane Isaias’ passage through the Southeast.

By Wednesday night, the agency had confirmed 18 tornadoes, with five classified as EF2 events. The confirmations followed assessments of damaged buildings, vehicles and other structures to determine whether the destruction was consistent with tornado activity.

Tornado reports can emerge quickly during hurricanes, but not every initial report is immediately confirmed. Weather officials examine damage patterns, determine wind direction and assess the intensity of the winds responsible for the destruction.

The resulting surveys help establish how many tornadoes occurred and where they traveled. Officials also warned that the confirmed number could change as additional surveys were completed.

EF2 Tornado Damages Walmart and Sam’s Club Area

One of the notable damage surveys involved Bonnie Doone, near Fayetteville, North Carolina, where an EF2 tornado struck commercial properties.

According to the NWS survey findings described in the report, the tornado removed several heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units from the roof of a strip mall. It then tore away another 10 HVAC units from a nearby Walmart.

The tornado continued through the area, collapsing light poles and damaging roofs. It also overturned several vehicles in the parking lot of a Sam’s Club.

The damage illustrated how tornadoes associated with tropical systems can affect large commercial buildings and parking areas, even when the tornadoes are relatively short-lived.

The EF2 classification indicates that the tornado produced winds strong enough to cause significant structural damage, although the precise impacts varied by location.

Duplin County Tornado Produced Winds of 115 MPH

Another significant tornado affected Duplin County, North Carolina, near Wallace and Beulaville.

The NWS report described an EF2 tornado with estimated winds of 115 mph. Near Wallace, the tornado lifted a two-car garage from its foundation.

Additional damage was reported near Beulaville, where the same tornado lofted debris approximately 13,000 feet into the air and tore an attached garage away from a house. A pickup truck was also moved during the event.

These findings demonstrate the destructive force that can develop when strong rotating winds pass through residential areas.

Garages, roof structures and vehicles can be particularly vulnerable when powerful winds strike buildings or lift objects from the ground. Flying debris can also travel considerable distances, creating hazards well beyond the immediate path of a tornado.

No Tornado Deaths Reported, but Hurricane Isaias Was Deadly

Despite the damage caused by the confirmed tornadoes, the initial report stated that no one was injured or killed by the tornadoes.

Hurricane Isaias nevertheless had a deadly overall impact, with as many as eight people reported killed by the hurricane. Those fatalities were associated with the broader storm and should not be confused with deaths directly attributed to the surveyed tornadoes.

Tropical systems can create several hazards at once, including flooding, damaging winds, storm surge and tornadoes. The tornadoes may affect relatively narrow paths, while the wider hurricane can expose a much larger region to dangerous conditions.

More Tornadoes Could Be Confirmed

The National Weather Service said storm surveys would continue during the week, using field personnel and drones to examine damaged locations.

Investigators use visible damage patterns and other evidence to estimate wind speeds, determine the direction of movement and establish whether destruction was caused by a tornado.

As those assessments progress, additional tornadoes could be added to the confirmed total. The final count may therefore differ from the number available during the initial surveys.

The ongoing work will help officials build a clearer picture of Hurricane Isaias’ tornado activity and the extent of the damage across the affected states.
