Mundelein, Illinois — What neighbors initially believed were firecrackers near the start of a Chicago Bears game became part of a disturbing investigation after police discovered five people shot dead inside a home in a quiet Illinois neighborhood.

Officers found the bodies of three men and two women at a residence in the 200 block of Wellington Avenue late Sunday night, October 18, after a concerned family member contacted police. Investigators said preliminary findings indicated an apparent murder-suicide.

The deaths have shocked residents of Mundelein, a community where neighbors described the people who lived in the home as friendly and well-liked.

Neighbors Heard Sounds They Thought Were Firecrackers

Residents told local news outlets that they heard what sounded like firecrackers around the time of Sunday’s Chicago Bears game but initially did not believe the noises indicated a serious incident.

“We heard firecrackers,” neighbor Sam Escobedo told ABC7. “Didn’t pay much attention to it; thought it was kids or something.”

It was not until approximately 11:45 p.m. Sunday that a concerned family member called police, prompting officers to investigate the home.

Inside, officers discovered five deceased individuals. The discovery transformed what had appeared to be an ordinary evening in the neighborhood into the scene of a major criminal investigation.

Authorities have not publicly established the exact time the shooting occurred or explained the circumstances that led to the family member’s call.

What Police Have Revealed About the Five Deaths

According to police, four of the five people found inside the home were members of the same family. The fifth person was believed to have been involved in a domestic relationship with the suspected shooter.

A preliminary investigation indicated that all five individuals died in an apparent murder-suicide. Investigators believe the victims were shot at close range with a handgun, and two handguns were recovered at the scene.

Police have not released the names of the deceased individuals. The Lake County Coroner’s Office was conducting autopsies and working to confirm their identities, according to information released Monday.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not publicly disclosed further details about the suspected shooter’s identity or the events leading up to the deaths.

Officials have emphasized that the incident appears to be isolated and that there is no threat to the public.

Neighbors Remember a Family They Described as Kind

As investigators worked at the property, neighbors shared memories of the people who lived there, describing them as welcoming and involved in the community. Escobedo remembered an older couple who would sit outside and dance to music together.

“The older couple would sit up there and dance to Paul Anka, ‘Put Your Head On My Shoulders,’ I think it was, and just sing, very lovely family,” he said.

He also recalled how the family had welcomed him when he moved into the neighborhood.

“I was one of the first Hispanics here, and they accepted me with open arms and lovely people; it’s quite tragic,” Escobedo added.

Other residents expressed similar shock and sadness. Neighbors said the couple who lived at the house were retired veterinarians, although officials had not officially confirmed their identities at the time of the reports.

Rosa Bernel, who said she had worked with the couple at a clinic they once owned, remembered them fondly.

“The best bosses I had in my whole life,” she said, describing the couple as very nice people.

Another neighbor recalled one of the women as someone who regularly waved to people and spoke with residents throughout the area.

Mundelein Community Leaves Flowers and Candles

The discovery has deeply affected residents of Mundelein, where neighbors described the town as a generally safe place to live. Pavli Ibarra called the community “really safe” and said learning that five people had died in the neighborhood was concerning.

As news of the deaths spread, community members began leaving flowers and candles near the home as a tribute to those who died.

Three bodies were removed from the residence at approximately 7 a.m. Monday, October 19, and placed into a black van, according to the account provided. The coroner’s office was continuing its work to establish the victims’ identities and determine the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The tributes reflect the grief felt by residents who knew the family personally, as well as those struggling to understand how such a tragedy could occur in their neighborhood.

Authorities have not released all the details surrounding the apparent murder-suicide, and the investigation is expected to establish a more complete timeline of what happened inside the home.
