Louisa, Virginia — A Virginia family is mourning the loss of a 4-year-old boy who died after a dog attack just days after beginning preschool. The child, identified as Garcia Welch in a fundraiser created to help his family with funeral expenses, was pronounced dead on October 18 following the attack in Louisa, authorities said.
Garcia had recently started preschool at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. According to the fundraiser, he is survived by his mother and older brother.
The tragic incident has left his family facing the loss of a young child whose life, according to those remembering him, had only just begun.
What Happened in the Virginia Dog Attack?
The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received a call at 4:42 p.m. reporting a dog attack.
When deputies arrived, they found the boy suffering from serious injuries while the dog continued attacking him, according to the sheriff’s office statement.
Authorities said deputies were “forced to put the dog down to stop the ongoing attack.”
Garcia was then taken by emergency medical technicians to a nearby landing zone for air transport to a hospital. Despite the emergency response, he was subsequently pronounced dead, officials said.
The sheriff’s office has not released further details about what led to the attack or the circumstances immediately before deputies arrived.
What Authorities Said About the Dog
According to authorities, the dog involved in the fatal incident was an American Bully.
American Bullies are a type of dog developed through selective breeding, with ancestry that can include American Pit Bull Terriers and bulldog-type breeds. However, breed identification alone does not establish why an individual attack occurred.
Officials have not released additional information about the dog’s history, its ownership or whether there had been any previous reports involving the animal.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have said additional details will be released when they become “available and appropriate.”
Garcia Welch Had Just Started Preschool
One of the most heartbreaking details shared about Garcia is that he had only recently started preschool at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.
At four years old, he was at the beginning of his educational journey, a time when children start building friendships, exploring new experiences and reaching early milestones.
The fundraiser established to help his family with funeral costs describes a child whose future held many possibilities.
Garcia’s death has also left his mother and older brother facing an unimaginable loss. The fundraiser asks for support as the family navigates funeral expenses and the difficult days ahead.
Fundraiser Seeks Help With Funeral Expenses
A GoFundMe campaign was created to help Garcia’s family cover funeral costs following his death.
The fundraiser’s description reflects on the life the young boy had ahead of him and the milestones he would no longer have the opportunity to reach.

“[He] had so much life left to live, so many milestones to reach, and so many memories yet to make,” the page reads.
As of Tuesday, October 20, the fundraiser was close to reaching its $20,000 goal, according to the information provided in the report. Contributions are intended to ease the family’s financial burden as they make arrangements to lay Garcia to rest and cope with the loss of their child.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office has not announced further details about the circumstances surrounding the attack. Authorities have indicated that updates will be shared when appropriate. For now, Garcia’s death has left his family grieving a young life cut short shortly after a major milestone: starting preschool.
The investigation may provide more information about the events leading up to the attack, but officials have not yet released additional findings.
