MAYS LANDING, N.J. — A quiet Saturday morning turned deadly in Mays Landing after a stolen luxury SUV allegedly being driven by a group of teenagers crashed head-on into another vehicle, killing a beloved local couple.
Alice Stilwell Holt, 67, and Robert “Bob” Barr Jr., 54, both of Egg Harbor Township, were killed around 7:30 a.m. Aug. 22 near Route 50 and Third Street, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutors allege the couple was traveling in a Hyundai sedan when the stolen Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon collided with their vehicle.
Surveillance footage captured the devastating moment, showing the black G-Wagon striking the Hyundai head-on and sending the smaller vehicle into a nearby gas station.
The crash ended what authorities say had started several hours earlier with the alleged theft of the luxury SUV.
Teens Allegedly Take G-Wagon on Joyride
According to prosecutors, 18-year-old Nayshaun Brown of Atlantic City and three juveniles allegedly stole a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon around 3:40 a.m. Saturday.
The vehicle was reportedly taken in Longport, where a local police officer spotted it speeding past and attempted to stop the teens. Instead of stopping, authorities say the driver continued, beginning a series of events that ultimately ended with the fatal collision.
Hamilton Township police later spotted the stolen SUV at around 7:45 a.m. and pursued it. However, officers lost sight of the vehicle just minutes before the crash, prosecutors said.
The G-Wagon then allegedly collided with Holt and Barr’s Hyundai near Route 50 and Third Street.
Couple Dies as Stolen SUV Crashes Into Their Car
The impact was severe enough to send the Hyundai into a nearby gas station. Holt and Barr both died in the crash, while the teenagers inside the stolen SUV reportedly suffered only minor injuries.
After the wreck, authorities said the teens attempted to flee on foot. Officers were able to apprehend them shortly afterward. The tragic outcome has left Holt and Barr’s family and friends mourning a couple who had spent more than two decades together.
A GoFundMe organized by a family friend described Holt as a beloved mother and grandmother, highlighting the sudden nature of the loss.
“This unimaginable tragedy has left their family in deep grief, and the shock of how suddenly it happened has made this painful time even harder to bear,” the fundraiser said.
Alice Holt and Bob Barr Remembered as Longtime Partners
Holt’s obituary said she and Barr had been longtime partners for more than 20 years following the death of her husband. The couple shared a life centered around simple activities and time together.
“Alice met her partner of 20+ years — Robert Barr II — whom she remained with until their untimely passing,” the obituary stated.
They enjoyed cooking together, visiting farmers markets, gardening and spending time with their two cats.
For their loved ones, those everyday moments now serve as memories of a relationship that ended in an unexpected and devastating way.
Four Teens Face Charges After Fatal Crash
Brown and the three juveniles have been charged with conspiracy counts involving aggravated assault, joyriding, eluding and receiving a stolen motor vehicle, authorities said. Brown also faces an additional charge of employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime.
Brown is being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility. Two of the juveniles remain in custody, while another was released by a Superior Court judge Sunday morning.
The investigation remains active as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the stolen vehicle, police pursuit and deadly collision.
