MILPITAS, Calif. — A routine day at a Silicon Valley apartment complex turned deadly after a woman was allegedly struck and run over by an SUV driven by a friend, according to court documents and local reports.

Police were called to the Mill Creek Apartments in Milpitas shortly after noon on Aug. 28 following reports of a hit-and-run. When officers arrived, they found a woman who was later identified as 35-year-old Anjana Hari.

Hari was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators were told that a blue SUV had fled the apartment complex following the incident. Officers later located the vehicle parked outside a Walgreens approximately one mile away.

The SUV had suffered what authorities described as heavy front-end damage, adding to the evidence investigators were examining as they reconstructed what happened.

Police Find Suspect With Damaged SUV

Authorities identified the driver as 32-year-old Anila Baby, who was found with the vehicle.

According to court documents, officers attempted to speak with Baby after locating the SUV. Investigators said she appeared “incoherent” and was unable to answer their questions.

Police also reportedly observed blood on Baby’s arms and legs.

The crash scene provided investigators with additional evidence. Officials said there was damage to three other vehicles in the area, suggesting the SUV struck multiple parked cars before leaving the apartment complex.

Friends and relatives later told investigators that Baby and Hari knew each other and lived in the same apartment complex.

That relationship has become a significant part of the investigation as authorities attempt to determine what happened immediately before the fatal incident.

Investigators Allege SUV Was Used Intentionally

According to court documents, witnesses told police that Hari appeared “relaxed and smiling” as she approached the SUV in the apartment parking lot.

Investigators allege Baby then accelerated from a stop while Hari was standing in front of the vehicle. The SUV allegedly struck Hari and ran her over before crashing into several parked vehicles and leaving the area.

A traffic officer who reviewed the scene reportedly found no tire marks, which investigators said could indicate that there was no attempt to brake before the impact. Based on the evidence collected, investigators wrote that they believe Baby intentionally struck Hari with the vehicle.

The criminal complaint also includes aggravating allegations that the killing involved great violence, use of a weapon and planning.

Those allegations have not been proven in court, and Baby remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until she is convicted.

Hari Leaves Behind Husband and Young Daughter

Hari’s death has left her family and friends grieving a woman whose life in the United States began only a few years ago. According to reports, Hari moved to the U.S. in 2021. She is survived by her husband, Vijesh, and their 6-year-old daughter.

Friends of Hari have also launched a GoFundMe campaign to help support her husband following her death.

The loss has added another painful dimension to a case that investigators say began with an encounter between two women who knew each other and lived in the same community.

Murder Case Moves Forward in Court

Baby is now facing a murder charge in connection with Hari’s death.

Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the alleged killing, and investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the relationship between the two women. Baby’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 10, when the case is expected to move forward through the legal process.

As prosecutors pursue the allegations, the central question remains what led to the confrontation and why Hari was allegedly struck by the SUV.

For Hari’s family, the investigation comes as they mourn a mother and wife whose life was suddenly cut short.
