Princeton, Kentucky — A Kentucky father will spend 20 years in prison after his 15-month-old son died in a motorcycle crash that happened while the child was strapped to his chest and the father was attempting a wheelie.

Joseph Traylor, 50, was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter while under the influence in connection with the death of his toddler son, Terry Traylor. He also pleaded guilty to reckless driving, according to a courtroom report.

Traylor was initially charged with murder, but prosecutors agreed to a plea deal in July that reduced the charge to vehicular manslaughter while under the influence.

Toddler Was Strapped to Father’s Chest

The fatal crash happened around 6:45 p.m. on July 5, 2024, in the 300 block of Beverly Lane in Princeton, a western Kentucky community located about 170 miles southwest of Louisville.

According to police, Traylor was riding a motorcycle with his young son strapped to his chest when the crash occurred.

Police said their investigation determined that Traylor was traveling the wrong way on a one-way street while attempting a wheelie. Authorities said the motorcycle lost control and struck a telephone pole.

“The investigation revealed that Traylor was operating a motorcycle with a 15-month-old strapped to his chest, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, and attempting a wheelie before losing control of the motorcycle and striking a telephone pole,” police wrote.

Child Was Airlifted to Nashville Hospital

Emergency responders rushed both Traylor and his son to a local hospital following the crash. Because of the severity of his injuries, Terry was later airlifted to a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee for additional treatment.

The toddler ultimately died from his injuries. Traylor was also hospitalized following the crash. Police arrested him after he was released from the hospital.

The circumstances surrounding the crash became the focus of the criminal investigation, eventually leading to the original murder charge and later plea agreement.

Father Receives 20-Year Prison Sentence

Traylor’s case came to a conclusion Friday when he was sentenced to 20 years behind bars after accepting the plea deal. Prosecutors told the court that Terry’s death had a profound and lasting effect on his family.

Circuit Judge Jamus Redd described the case as a tragedy and said he hoped the sentence would provide some measure of closure for Terry’s relatives.

The sentence brings an end to more than two years of legal proceedings stemming from the deadly crash.

While the original murder charge carried potentially more severe consequences, the plea agreement allowed prosecutors to secure a conviction on the lesser vehicular manslaughter charge.

Family Remembers Toddler’s Short Life

Despite the circumstances surrounding Terry’s death, his family has remembered him for the joy he brought during his brief life. Terry’s obituary described his “infectious smile” as a blessing to everyone who knew him.

“Terry’s memory will be lovingly remembered by his devoted family,” the obituary reads.

The words offer a glimpse into the loss experienced by the family following the toddler’s death. For Terry’s relatives, the sentencing represents the conclusion of a case that began with a devastating crash on a Princeton street in the summer of 2024.

The court’s decision also underscores the consequences that followed the actions leading to the child’s death. Traylor will now serve his 20-year prison sentence following his guilty pleas in the case.
