MOBERLY, Mo. — A Missouri family is mourning the sudden death of a woman who was allegedly shot in her own driveway just one day after welcoming the accused gunman into her home for a family barbecue.
Cheryl Gravitt, 57, was fatally shot around 7 p.m. on Aug. 23 at a residence on Morehead Street in Moberly, a small community roughly 40 miles north of Columbia.
According to police and a probable cause statement, emergency dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a loud “pop” and a woman lying on the ground and bleeding.
When officers arrived, they found Gravitt in the driveway with an apparent gunshot wound to the back of her head. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Authorities have since charged Christopher Viley, 51, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
Family Friend Was at Her Home the Night Before
The circumstances surrounding Gravitt’s death have left her family struggling to understand what happened. Family members told KOMU that Gravitt was taking out the trash when she was attacked. Even more difficult for them to comprehend is the fact that Viley was reportedly a family friend.
Just one night before the shooting, Viley had brought his minor children to Gravitt’s home for a barbecue. According to Gravitt’s loved ones, the evening appeared completely normal.
“Everything was great,” Gravitt’s girlfriend said. “Chris then came back later that night, and we all played dice and were hanging out. Everything was fine.”
She described the relationship between Gravitt and Viley as close, saying Gravitt was known as “Momma C” to him.
“This was Momma C to him; that’s why I don’t understand,” she said. The family said Viley had also regularly brought his children to Gravitt’s home to watch cartoons.
Witnesses Describe Moments After Shooting
Investigators received information from multiple witnesses who were near the scene. One confidential witness told police they were sitting on a nearby front porch when they heard what sounded like a gunshot.
The witness then saw Gravitt fall to the ground while the person identified as the defendant was reportedly running away from the area. Another witness reported hearing a loud pop and seeing a Black man wearing a blue shirt standing in the driveway near Gravitt.
Police later said surveillance footage showed Viley in the area immediately after the shooting and wearing a blue shirt. The combination of witness statements and surveillance footage became important pieces of evidence in the investigation.
Suspect Arrested After Brief Standoff
The search for Viley continued for several days following the shooting.
On Aug. 27, police located and arrested him approximately half a mile from the scene after what authorities described as a brief standoff. Viley is now being held in the Randolph County Jail without bond.
He appeared in court Monday and pleaded not guilty to the charges. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 8.
Family Struggles With Sudden Loss
Gravitt’s loved ones have described her as someone who consistently helped other people. Her twin sister expressed disbelief that the woman who had been there for so many people was suddenly killed at her own home.
“She helped everybody, and then for her to be gunned down in her own driveway,” her sister said. “How not fair.”
The family has been left trying to reconcile the person they knew with the allegations now surrounding her death. The fact that Viley had reportedly been welcomed into Gravitt’s home with his children just one night earlier has made the tragedy particularly difficult to process.
Police Say Suspect Has Criminal History
According to the probable cause statement, Viley has two previous assault convictions from the 1990s and a 2022 conviction for resisting or interfering with an arrest.
Police also said he was arrested for domestic assault in February. Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the alleged shooting. Viley remains jailed without bond as the murder case moves through the court system.
For Gravitt’s family, the investigation may eventually provide answers about why the deadly attack happened. But for now, they are left grieving a woman they say spent her life helping others and who was killed in the driveway of the home where she had welcomed a family friend only hours earlier.
