Chesterfield County, Virginia — A Meadowbrook High School student who suffered life-threatening brain injuries following an alleged assault at school is now home and recovering, according to his family.

Irvin E. Rodriguez Gaitan was involved in an altercation with another student at Meadowbrook High School on Monday, Sept. 14, according to his family and local reports. What began as an encounter in a school hallway left Rodriguez hospitalized with serious injuries and prompted a police investigation at the Virginia campus.

Family Says Hallway Encounter Turned Violent

According to Rodriguez’s family, he was walking through a hallway with his girlfriend when he accidentally bumped into another student.

The family told a local news outlet that the other student then allegedly attacked Rodriguez.

A School Resource Officer initially requested EMS to the school after what authorities believed was a medical emergency. Police later confirmed that they were investigating an assault at Meadowbrook High School.

The incident prompted a significant police response while students remained on campus.

Meadowbrook High Was Placed on Lockdown

Following the incident, Meadowbrook High School was initially placed on lockdown before moving to a hold status.

Under the hold, students remained in their classrooms while normal instruction continued.

The Chesterfield County Police Department said:

“Police are on scene at Meadowbrook High School after an assault. There is no ongoing threat at this time, but the school is in a secured status while Police investigate,”

The school division later confirmed that the lockdown had ended and that the campus had moved to a hold status. In a statement, the school division said:

“Meadowbrook High is no longer on lockdown; the school has moved to a hold status. Earlier this morning, there was a student altercation and police and EMS were called to respond. Police have shared that there is no ongoing threat at the school.”

Officials said there was no ongoing threat to the school following the incident.

Student Suffered Life-Threatening Brain Injuries

Rodriguez was taken to a hospital following the altercation, according to his family. The family told that he suffered life-threatening brain injuries and initially remained in serious condition.

Authorities did not report any weapons being involved in the altercation. The other student was subsequently charged with aggravated malicious wounding and was being held at a juvenile detention center, the outlet reported.

Because the suspect is a minor, their identity has not been publicly released.

Family Shares Hopeful ICU Update

In the days following the incident, Rodriguez’s condition began to improve.

An update posted Tuesday, Sept. 15, to a GoFundMe organized by his brother, Kevin Rodriguez, said Rodriguez remained in the ICU but had regained consciousness.

Kevin wrote:

“As of today, he is still in the ICU, but we are incredibly grateful that he has woken up. He has been able to talk to us and eat a little,”

The update provided the family with an encouraging sign after what had been a frightening period. By the following day, Rodriguez had been released from the ICU, according to another family update.

Later Wednesday, Sept. 16, the family shared that he had finally returned home.

Family Says Long Recovery Remains Ahead

Kevin shared the family’s relief in an emotional update.

“My parents, sister and I are happy and grateful to share that my brother is finally HOME! ❤️,” Kevin wrote.

Although Rodriguez is now home, his family said he still has a long recovery ahead of him and asked supporters to continue offering prayers and support.

The GoFundMe campaign was created to help the family manage expenses connected to his recovery. According to the fundraiser, those expenses include medical costs, transportation, rehabilitation and time away from work.
