INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. — A routine drive along Interstate 95 turned into a deadly chain of events late Sunday night after an alligator entered the roadway and triggered a crash that ultimately claimed the life of a 20-year-old Florida woman.
The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that the fatal incident happened around 11:52 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, near mile marker 214 on I-95.
According to the crash report, a 58-year-old driver was traveling south in a Mercedes-Benz when the driver suddenly encountered an alligator in the roadway.
The driver was unable to avoid the animal and struck the alligator, setting off a series of events involving two other vehicles.
Toyota Tacoma Swerves and Overturns
After the Mercedes-Benz hit the alligator, a 20-year-old woman driving a Toyota Tacoma attempted to avoid the Mercedes, according to the crash report.
The maneuver went tragically wrong. The Toyota lost control and overturned, causing the young driver to be ejected from the vehicle.
Authorities later determined that the woman was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the report. The situation then became even more dangerous when another vehicle approached the scene.
That third vehicle struck the woman before leaving the area without stopping, according to authorities. Emergency responders arrived after the chain-reaction crash, but the young woman could not be saved. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Victim Identified as Cassi Taylor
The woman killed in the crash has since been identified as Cassi Taylor, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. Taylor had recently started working as a Civilian Corrections Assistant and had been in the position for a little more than a month.
She was scheduled to be officially sworn into the role on Monday, Aug. 31, just one day after the deadly crash.
Taylor was also the daughter of Deputy Scott Burke, adding another deeply personal dimension to the tragedy for those in law enforcement and the local community.
What was supposed to be an important milestone in Taylor’s new career instead became a heartbreaking day for her family.
Hit-and-Run Driver Remains Wanted
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz stayed at the scene and remained there until authorities arrived.
Investigators are now focused on identifying the driver of the third vehicle, which struck Taylor after she was ejected from the Toyota and then fled.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers continue to search for information that could help identify the vehicle and its driver. Authorities have not announced an arrest in connection with the hit-and-run.
The crash remains under investigation as officials work to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine exactly how the vehicles interacted in the moments after the alligator entered the roadway.

Florida Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation, and officials are asking anyone with information about the hit-and-run vehicle or driver to come forward.
The driver who initially struck the alligator remained at the scene, while the third driver remains the focus of the search.
