Jackson, Mississippi — A former youth gymnastics coach has been sentenced to 90 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to secretly recording young female gymnasts undressing and using the bathroom at a Mississippi gymnastics studio, according to court proceedings.

U.S. District Judge Kristi Johnson handed down the maximum possible sentence on Wednesday, ordering Sean Gardner, 39, to serve 30 years in prison for each of three federal charges involving the production of child sexual abuse material. The sentence is likely to keep him behind bars for the rest of his life.

The case has renewed concerns about athlete safety and whether gymnastics organizations did enough to respond to allegations involving a coach who worked with young competitors.

Hidden Camera at Mississippi Gym Led to Federal Charges

Gardner pleaded guilty to placing a hidden camera in a bathroom at a gymnastics studio in Purvis, Mississippi, between December 2017 and April 2018.

According to investigators, the recordings included close-up images of at least 10 minors who were naked or undressing. Authorities later recovered the videos from Gardner’s computers while investigating allegations that he had sexually abused gymnasts in Iowa.

The discovery led to federal charges related to the recordings. Gardner’s guilty pleas formed the basis for the sentencing decision.

The investigation drew attention to the risks children can face in settings where adults hold positions of trust and have regular access to young athletes.

Judge Orders Maximum 90-Year Prison Sentence

Judge Kristi Johnson imposed the maximum sentence available for the three federal charges to which Gardner pleaded guilty. He was ordered to serve 30 years for each count, totaling 90 years in federal prison. Given his age, the sentence is likely to amount to life imprisonment.

The sentence represents the outcome of the federal case involving the secret recordings. It does not mean Gardner has been convicted of every allegation made against him in separate investigations.

His arrest by the FBI during the previous summer had already drawn attention to his coaching history and the concerns raised by former students.

Iowa Allegations Remain a Separate Matter

Before the federal case, Gardner had worked at Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa. Several former students have alleged to police and in civil lawsuits that he used his position as a coach to sexually abuse them.

Gardner has not been charged in connection with those Iowa allegations, according to the information reported in the case. Police have said they would determine how to proceed with the Iowa investigation after the federal proceedings concluded.

The distinction is important because the allegations in Iowa remain separate from the federal charges involving the hidden camera in Mississippi. The 90-year sentence relates to the federal case and Gardner’s guilty pleas.

Gymnastics Organization Faces Renewed Scrutiny

The case has also raised questions about how sports organizations respond when allegations of misconduct involve coaches who work closely with children.

Gardner coached several promising young gymnasts and served as director of an annual winter competition in Iowa that attracted hundreds of participants.

Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute was founded by Liang “Chow” Qiao, a prominent coach known for working with Olympic champions.

The case has placed additional attention on the responsibility of coaches and sports organizations to take concerns about athlete safety seriously.

According to the U.S. Center for SafeSport, its investigation found that Chow and other coaches had been aware of allegations of sexual misconduct involving Gardner but failed to report them to the center as required by its policies.

Those findings have intensified questions about whether concerns were communicated to the appropriate authorities and whether reporting requirements were followed.

What Happens Next in the Investigation?

With the federal sentencing complete, attention may turn to the remaining questions surrounding the allegations made by former students in Iowa.

Authorities have not announced charges against Gardner connected to those claims in the information provided. Any further action will depend on the separate investigation and decisions by law enforcement.

The case underscores the importance of safeguarding children in youth sports, including appropriate reporting procedures, accountability and protections for athletes who raise concerns.
