Puerto San Carlos, Baja California Sur — Hurricane Polo is bearing down on Mexico as a powerful Category 3 hurricane, bringing potentially life-threatening winds, flash flooding, dangerous surf and storm surge to communities along the Pacific coast.
The storm, packing sustained winds near 115 mph, is forecast to reach the west coast of Baja California Sur late this afternoon or evening, according to the National Hurricane Center. Polo is expected to remain near major hurricane strength as it reaches the peninsula before weakening while crossing the rugged terrain and moving toward mainland Mexico.

The Mexican navy has deployed personnel and aid supplies to Pacific ports, including Guaymas and Mazatlán, while soldiers have established shelters in remote and vulnerable communities such as San Juanico.
Polo Could Make Another Landfall in Sonora
Polo’s danger may not end after crossing Baja California.
Forecast projections indicate that the hurricane could make a second landfall in southern or central Sonora late Monday night or early Tuesday before rapidly weakening over land.
Even as the storm loses its tropical characteristics, heavy rainfall could continue to create dangerous conditions across portions of northern Mexico.
